As far as being called an Ovation Fanatic, I think "fanatic" is where the word "fan" comes from, so all of us are fanatics. Great article by Nick. I'm starting to think that maybe I should start being more open-minded about those plastic cars--Corvettes. Nah. They don't age well (i.e. "rust").

As I said, I am no expert in music and was reading the forums to figure out if anyone else experienced what I have going on. I'm trying to do a track for a new dvd and keep getting a click in the middle of it: http://www.treasuresites.com/Mattsolo1.mov I recorded the track using my guitar plugged into a Roland Cube 60 then to an EDIROL UA-20 and into Garageband which exports it to Quicktime as a .mov (that may be the problem, since audio is 44 and video audio is 48 -- but I'm not sure since Quicktime seems to capture everything as .mov). I am running 10.4.2 Tiger.

If you can isolate the click on the wav file, it may be possible to repair. There is a feature I used in Wavelab that "smooths" out clicks in 1 to 2 second chunks. I don't recommend any longer as it sounds weird after that. I think it picks up something (soooo technical) from the surrounding wave and kind of blurs it over. Imperceptible to most hearing.

In the new, it evidently saves everything as a .mov file and if you transport it to web streaming or audio sound files there's a dropdown list and you simply hit Mpeg4 and it converts it. I'm not discounting I may have save setting to reset in Logic and Garageband as well.

Usually shows up when the software is rendering to a compressed format while recording, I've run into the same thing when trying to record into MP3. I'm not familiar with garageband, but your best bet is to see if it will let you record as WAV or AIF, then convert to whatever afterwards. Any pressure you can take off of the CPU while recording will reduce these kinds of errors. Nice piece, by the way.

Still developing the piece. You may be on to something as well -- GB gives compression ratios and I heavilly compressed that piece. I'll go back and re-record it multiple ways now and see where the artifact comes back (hey, it could simply be a loose cord rotating -- you never know). Anyway, back to the drawing board . . . Happy playing.

Like I said, if you can make GB record to an uncompressed format, you should have no problems. If it won't, then turn the compression down as much as it will let you. Or find better software that will. I realize that as a Mac user your options are limited...

Although I'm not offended, I just talked to my computer and it is, and I understand you'll be hearing from its lawyer shortly . . . (oops, wrong thread). GB, Logic, et al, lets you compress in many parameters, or none at all, aiff, wav, etc., can do -- should be a matter of playing with it now that I know what's going on. Agree it's definately an artifact. The piece is a long shot from the final product so I've got time to play around (I'll post what it was and the settings to avoid artifacts in GB/Logic when I'm done). Happy playing.

My feeling has always been, if it does what you want it to for the price you want to pay, it's the right one for you. The fact is, Mac users are limited in their selection of software. I think that's too bad, and probably one of the main reasons I don't have one. I'd love to use Linux instead of windows too, but the hardware and software support just isn't there yet. Someday. By then Gates will own copyright on any OS with an X in it's name...
