Hey guys.

Okay, so my first post asked about the various models of electrics Ovation uses. Now, I have a fairly shameful question about the 1778T Elite T.

My question is about the finishes. On the Ovation website, there are three: rough black, rough silver, and red flame.

However, I recently saw a rough red one show up on eBay, and just today I walked into a Guitar Center to see an orange flame model. Then, I come here and find out there are blue and purple flame jobs, too!

This leads me to ask two questions. One, does anyone know of any other 1778 colors I haven't listed above? And two, am I to believe that the blue flame has been discontinued? 'Cause I kinda love it.

Thanks in advance for any advice anyone can offer me.

Eric

There might be one or two other options....

This was out of the custom shop for the Dallas Kaman rep (they took it away from him!!). It had a sweet Korina neck too.

I've seen a red one at GC. I think we will be seeing a lot of finishes that won't even make the catalog. Remember the "beads of water on blue" we saw at the tour? The R&D guy said that they were working on a new "process".
As to my two cent worth of advise to to our Wide-eyedthickfingered friend...be sure to spend some strum time with the rough texture model before you decide. It may be just my strumming style (or lack of it), but if my finger tips sweep across the top, it makes an noise like one of those percussion things that you hold and rub a stick over.
EliteT is an awesome guitar. A lot of bang for the buck.
I'd go for the flames.

Hey Eric,
You are not far from stonebobo.
And I am from Oakland (a long time ago)
I have a black T and think it is a great guitar for the price.

WETF/Eric,
See Al's pitiful appeal for solicitations and see the variations that are available through him! He has great deals!

The flame models are a bit pricier but they are the bomb! Some of the flame painted ones are only painted on the front. If you wind up going mail order be sure you ask if it's only the top or all the way around. Oh yea... This guitar is right up there in the rotation with my ADII and U681T. It's that good.

I'll take that advice (as well as the advice to play a rough finish model first - I strum hard and sloppily at times, so that extra noise could be a real downer), but if you'll forgive a noob question ... who's Al?

And I'm very intrigued by the revelation that there are some 1778Ts where the flames actually do wrap all the way around the body - I thought that was just a mistake on the Ovation web site, as all the models I've seen, even in GC, have had the black bowl.

Thanks for all the input guys!

Al Pepiak (alpep) is the proprieter of the link on the left side of this page - Lost Art/Vintage Instruments. He's an AOD. (Authorized Ovation Dealer). And a nice guy. And a pretty darn good guitarist.

. . . and I DO believe that the RedFlameT that Al has listed IS in fact one of the few with the the flamed bowl . . .
(see Al's thread entitled "inventory update")

I think the one Al has is in fact like mine with the flames all the way around, AND I think it is an FRG that he has priced pretty damn nice!

The factory has a deal with PPG (the paint people) to do a bunch of custom limited-quantity finishes on the 1778T. Red flame was the first, followed by blue, purple, the raindrops, etc., etc. I think I heard at the factory they will do a hundred or so of each and move onto another one. If you find one you like, because it will not make "regular" production.

The ones that were made of GC, (and probably what is showing on the website), did the top only and are a bit cheaper. Not the "custom shop" ones which list at just under $2grand. AlPep has two frgs (red and blue I think) for sale right now. They're probably a real good deal. See his post on his inventory in the For Sale section.

I really like the way these play and would snatch one up (probably red) if I wasn't saving all my money and GAS for the OFC guitar.

Fred,

If I remember right, that was the only time that guy had an Ovation in his hands. Wouldn't put down his Taylor if it killed him. (Even though we tried)

I actually have a question about that purple flame model, if you don't mind Purple Flame. I've seen seven shots of that model now, and in at least half of them, it looks almost as if the paint is color-shifting, taking on a more lavender hue at some points, and becomeing more golden/orange at others. I've seen cars with this paint job. Is this the case with the guitar as well, or is that just a trick of the light?

Wide-eyed..:When I hold my guitar in a different angle the colour will change (especially in daylight. As you can see in my photogallery, most pictures are made in my backyard with sunny weather. The colourrange is then optimal). So no picturetricks but real spectacular effects.I invite you to come over here so you can see her with your own eyes..! You're welcome!
