anyone ever replaced the stock pings with schaller minis?
if so any pics?
i find the stock buttons too big at the D and G spots- hits the headstock with a winder. and they just look a little big to me.
anyone try the minis???????????????? |

Location: toneville USA | well, obviously, the schallers are the superior(of the 2) machines functionally...
but the size it what i'm interested in.
not that much diff. between reg and mini schallers as far as feel goes, besides the button.
i'd like to see an O headstock(non-slot) with minis. |

Location: Warren,Pa. | I was going to rpl the chrome pings on my LX with gold Schallers, but when I removed the pings I realized the footprint would always be there. For that reason I put gold Pings on it. There are quite a few full-size guitars being sold with mini's these days. I think it would look fine and feel better to you from the FRONT. As long as you'd be OK with the obvious traces of the old tuners on the back. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | I think you can just put mini buttoms on your existing tuners, therefor no footprint issues. I know I've done the opposite - replaced minis with full sized buttons. Dave |

Location: Massachusetts | Why are the Schallers superior to Pings? If so I'm surprised they put the Pings on the 05 Collectors.
They seem fine to me so far. In fact, the Pings on my 2000 S771 are rock solid. That guitar stays in tune better than any guitar I own. Even better than the Grover equiped Gibson. Grovers take a billion turns of the knob just to get the strings to move.
So what's up with Schaller/Ping. Sorry, I haven't gone mini.
The first 05 I had was neck heavy and could see a lightweight tuner being added to that one but the one I have now is fine. |

Yes, you get what you pay for. The Pings are nice, work fine, and I'm sure Ovation goes for them due to cost. My last new Adamas came with Schallers, by the way. Nothing wrong with Ping. But the are not Schallers. Maybe best to compare them 10 years from now.
Btw, nothing wrong with Klusons. They have a different gear ratio (16:1?) than Ping/Schaller. Just because it takes more turns does not mean they are inferior. Some people like the higer ratio because they can "fine tune" the tuning better. My favorite tuners are the open gear Weaverly's.

My MEWP gets 13:1 which, for me, is the minimum acceptable number of turns, on the other hand the MEWP is incredibly stable so once you're tuned it, it stays tuned. Put me in the grover camp when it comes to replacement tuners.
Also, as to size of the buttons, I've found the larger the better. My old tele had tiny tuning buttons, so it was kind of a pain to wrap my fingers around them, kind of like trying to pick up a pin versus a dollar coin. A lot easier to pick up a dollar. |

so you could put schaller mini buttons on the stock pings from say a new 1778LX?

i have a set of the statites on my D28. i thought they were the BOMB until a friend came over with his new martin MC-40 (eric johnson signature model ) that has nickel Waverly's...
there is NO, i repeat, NO comparison. the waverly's feel /look better,operate more smoothly and tune easier.
well worth the extra $100. but they're still not Rodgers tuners, hand made for classical guitars, that sell for a minimum of $600 and can cost as much as $1000. |
