I'm going to be up in Montreal for a week in August, and I was wondering if anyone here could recommend some music stores to visit. I always try to hit a music store in every city I visit. Thanks. I promise to give a full report of their ovation selections or notable features. Some of you may remember my review of Redbank, NJ last summer. The home Springsteen, where every kid has an axe. :)

I'm not familiar with some of the small locals in Montreal - but it is home to Steve's Music - one of the larger music stores in Canada.
If you happen to flip into Ottawa - check out Long & McQuade (owners of Yorkville Sound). They too have a real nice store - not a boutique kinda place - all name brands for the most part - but with the exchange rate on the US dollar - you may find some very nice deals.

I checked out Steves website. I think it's within walking distance of the hotel. It looks like I could spend the day there. :)

The Steve's stores are very nice...I have been into the Ottawa store and have left some cash behind when I left.

Welcome to the OFC, Merc.

What model Gretsch did you just pick up and what type "O"s do you have?

Stephen, thank you for the welome :)

I picked up a Pro Jet G5236, for my daughter!
I don't have an "O", I have a Celebrity lcc047!!
The only half decent left hand guitar I could find, in that price range.(use to roadie for a band in Montreal when I was a kid and they had an "O" I just loved the sound of it)
I started playing a few months ago, due to having to wait for my daughter at her lessons,
I figured I would try a few lessons, have been playing every day since!!
Some day in the very near future I will be playing a real "O". :D

Cheers
Steve

Merc, welcome aboard! You can usually pick up a good deal on O's at L&M's downtown Toronto.

AN4340 - Steve's is indeed a full day adventure. I remember when I was younger - the kids would spend weeks and weeks working on the latest licks and then plugging in at Steve's and showing off! There use to be a huge sign posted "NO STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN"...

Ahhhh - I remember when!

Wanted to give a brief review of Steve's in Montreal. They have lot's of guitars, focus is on new instruments, not as many as Guitar Center on 14th street, but more than Umanov's. Ovations first, the selection was paltry. They only had about 15 ovation guitars and half of those were celebrities. I tried the 2005 collectors and the set up was lousy and it had old strings. What a disappointment. So on to the Canadian made acoustics from Godin, and some other Canadian brands, and these were a pleasure to play. Next I went over to the electic side. I'm interested in short scale instruments now so I tried a fender mustang, and unplugged it feels smooth, I mean really nice, though it looks like something from the Jetsons, and then plugged in, phew, what a piece of shit, I told the kid, take this away! So then I tried the electric Godins, and guess what, excellent set up, excellent sound. I only had three hours, while my wife took a nap, so, that's all I had time for. The message seems to be, if your interested in a Godin or Canadian made instrument and you're in Montreal that's the place to go, otherwise don't disappoint yourself. Next door is Jack's, much friendlier, less of a selection, though they had a nice old mustang, really sweet. This time, as opposed to when I came back from china, I will be really brief as to the food, music and people etc. and all I'll say, is that they were great.
