I have an older(pre-1980) deep bowl Balladeer with the soundhole and no built-in pup. I have a transducer. But I recently purchased a 1980's DIMARZIO II Magnetic Soundhole PUP made especially for bronze strings(I contacted DIMARZIO and they identified it and gave the info). It sounded a tad brassy, but I connected it to a very small Pot control box that I put together(vol. & tone) without having to use the amps' controls. It actually sounds pretty good now. The tone control did the trick. Has anyone out there tried something like this out? Any opinions?

regardless what manufacturers say about magnetic pickups being "designed for bronze strings" they can't change the laws of physics and the fact is that any magnetic pickup works much better with nickel strings which have a higher ferrous content

I'm just starting to play again. You're right about the law for physics. I just thought they had something special added to the pups. Is it a bad pickup for all strings? I guess I'll go back to the transducer.
