Location: Morrilton, AR | Ok, so I bought a cheap strat imitation with a humbucker in the bridge position...I know I wont like the pickups most likely, but all I really care about is that bridge humbucker. I've been looking on eBay at pickups and I was wondering...what is the best sound determining quality of a pickup? Is it the power it puts out? I've seen pickups on eBay that put out 11k..and they talk about how hot they are, then I see 21k models...and I've even seen a 57.4k :eek: ..so the seller claimed. Any insight for me? Oh and if anyone wants to see pics of my finished project I'll put them up when I get done. |

Location: Maryland, USA | Best way is to go to manufacturer's websites and listen to some audio of the pickup in action.
I don't think the out-out is the only determining factor of a pickup...
I just ordered some pickups for my (non-Gibson)Les Paul 3 days ago from Bill Lawrence. They make them hand made, and from what I read, the L-500XL is the same pickup Dimebag Darrell used before his endorsement with Seymour Duncan.

Location: Capital District, NY, USA Minor Outlying Islands | I've been extremely happy, in fact deleriously, happy, with replacement Bill Lawrence pickups. Seymour Duncans are good too. The only other after market pickup I'd look at is a Gibson p-94. But it all depends on what you want. I don't like my pickups too hot, they should have a wide frequency range and be relatively quiet. If it's your first go at this, probably stick with a Bill Lawrence pickup that most resembles the one already in your axe.
PS The Bill Lawrence pick ups take about a month to get. |

Location: Maryland, USA | But Bill Lawrence pick-ups are not only less expensive, but sound just as good or better than the expensive Dimarzio's, Seymour Duncan's, Gibson, EMG Passives, etc. |

The fat strat that is. I haven't got to play on the stock one yet though, so I'll see how that turns out. The strat was an off white to begin with..also an eBay "special" and had factory blemishes. The neck is from a Johnson and guess where it came from too. I wanted to theme the paintjob after EVH's guitars, but didn't want to exactly copy them so I used a dark metallica blue in place of red.
I liked the paintjob so much that I did my LP replica a few days afterward. |
