Is an Adamas 1581 that much superior to a 1597, or is it just that the older guitars show more craftsmanship?

They are completely different guitars which really can not be compared. Other than to say that one sounds like heaven and the other sounds like hell. Put it another way - one deserves to be called an Adamas and the other does not. Dave

PS - Someone will chime in how they love their 1597. That's great, everyone should love their guitars. I have owned both of these models and only one of them still resides in my collection. Guess why.

Not had the luxury of playing an Adamas with a textured top yet. While I find my 1598 an excellant tool there just a lack of inspiration most of the time.

I need to spend a weekend at Tony's!

Now how am I supposed to get to sleep tonight???

Tomorrow a.m. I will ship out the Mandolin that went on eBay. Then we (me and She who must get away)load up and spend the weekend at the ocean, no guitars or weekly church-band-rituals. Come Monday I will take you up on that.

I find it very hard to wait and save for one nice guitar when there are so many flavors out there.

yes, too many flavors...

but, pretty tough to find them to enjoy.

sometimes, a get-together or a loan is the only way to experience these great instruments.

of course, the downside is the tremendous GAS it creates.

Thanks, Dave. That'll keep me away from the 1597 on the bay.

Now how about between the 1581 & 1687?
Both of these have now been reissued and are more likely to be available, and I'm pretty sure the #47 reissue is gonna be waaaay out of my reach.

I've never actually owned a 1687. Not a fan of the scrolled headstocks. But I have owned several 1681 and 1581 which is an exact comparison because both are Adamas II deep bowls. Only difference is the 16 is standard non-cutaway and the 15 is cutaway single epaulet. I prefer the looks of 16, but 15 has more balls in the bottom end due to the epaulet arrangement. I can buster the treble side of the 16 and make it sound the same as the 15. Personal opinion, the reissue black 15 is a killer of a guitar. Dave

Ahhh...That's disappointing to hear about the 1597. I agree it's very good to know, just not what I wanted to hear ;-)

Those are just my opinions. Others could come to the exact opposite conclusion. Dave

Is a 1581 the same price, or twice the price of a 1597? Forgive my ignorance!

1581's should go for $1000 to $1200 in my opinion, which is to say that is what i would be willing to pay. be patient, they show up. Stephen is selling his 1681 last I knew, and I may be selling mine in another few weeks (need to get it back from my friend). peace

The guitar is magnificient. Near mint, 1990 model with the OP24 preamp on it.

Just have to pair down the collection a bit due to unforseen medical issues that have to be resolved.

I was going to trim the herd a bit anyway.

This just helped to speed up the process.

Whoever gets some of my stuff is going to be a very very happy camper!

Damn, you have a lot of nice guitars! LOL
Most seem to be the epaulet style though; not a fan of the round hole? (sorry for the blatant hijack)

Not at all.....don't really care as long as it sounds good...better than average....great actually.

Most higher end O's tend to have the epaulet style.

One of the best (if not the best) sounding O I have is the FD14 which is a round hole.

One of the other top sounding O's I have is the 30th anniversary custom legend....another round hole.

Then there is the U681T Adamas which is probably right up there with the pick of the litter and the 1581 Adamas II reissue.....both epaulets and both incredible sounding guitars.

Like I said....for me, the sound in more important that the configuration and Ovation excels at both.
