Just wanted to let everyone know Kaki is very alive and was doing VERY well last night at the UW Memorial Union in Madison, Wisconsin. I think this is the 4th time she has been to Madison and the 3rd time I've been treated by her talent. The crowd was a bit on the noisy side but she played through it. She played her Adamas, an electric lap steel and an "ugly electric made in Woodstock NY". She ran the steel guitar through a loop and laid down some really amazing tracks. Sang a few pieces and announced that she was no longer with Sony/BMG. I think she's just gettin' started.

Good news ! Thank's !
In France we are a little upset because two concerts were already cancelled... and we don't know why (perhaps a lack of people... I don't know).
I can't wait the 9th october, the date when I'll see her in Paris !
(and I'm not the only one, don't you Jerome ? :D )

WOW! No longer with Sony/BMG???? That was a short stay......

Yes, I've no doubt she has a long career in front of her.

I should pay more attention to her tour information. My brother lives in Madison and is on staff at the University, and would have been very impressed. He is an able guitarist in his own right, and thus better able to appreciate Kaki's formidable skill.

I was impressed with the age spread of the crowd. Edouard, she mentioned problems with the French tour and Sony. Could be why there were some cancelations.

Paul,
Be sure to let your brother know that Nickel Creek will be here on 10/30 at the Orpheum. Concerts there often go un-noticed. Another young group of very talented folks.

She really didn't mention anything about the cancelations, just talked about the lack of promotions in France and Italy. She's not a woman of many words.

Bill, here's a picture of the "ugly electric guitar" she's touring with:

It's a baritone electric guitar made by a luthier in upstate New York. She told me that although it's ugly, "it sounds great". Jerome and Edouard will see her use it in Paris. Although there have been some schedule changes in France, 90% of the original tour is still booked, and there will probably be some new bookings to fill in the schedule. For example, Milan, Italy has just been added at the end of the tour.

Her 18 month relationship with Sony/Epic was a tremendous boost to her career, and I'm sure she will always be grateful to them for signing her and releasing her second CD. In many ways, it struck me as a "small miracle" that a niche artist like her would even attract the attention of the major label. Right now, the big labels all seem to be in financial trouble (Sony Music just laid off 10,000 employees!) and they seem to be under tremendous pressure from piracy, file transfer hosts, and the general decline in overall sales of CDs.

Imho, Kaki would probably relish the additional artistic independence associated with a smaller label. It would not surprise me at all if her next move was in that direction.

As for Jerome and Edouard, all I can say is "Viva La France!"

That's the one! I didn't think it was all that ugly but she's right, it sounds nice. She claims all the strings are connected to gether so that when you change one, they all need to be re-tuned.
Any idea what the lap steel is. She kept messin' around with the bridge while she played. I'm not sure what she was doing. I still thing the Adamas sounds best and it got the best response from the crowd too.

I can tell you that the frenchies who have already their ticket (like Jérôme and I) would like to have a "temporal accelerator" to be sent directly the day of the concert !!!!!

Hi,

We're so impatient in France.
I will take my digital camera and I'll try to take some photos of Kaki on stage in Paris.

Edouard, some other Ovation French fans and me will be there. We have decided to have a beer together before the concert and maybe to have a dinner after. And why not some other beers untill the end of the night???  :D
I haven't met Edouard before and I'm very glad to meet him for this great moment.

Some other guys already have their tickets for the concerts in Bordeaux, Strasbourg, Nancy and Rennes. Marseille is cancelled...

Sony/BMG doesn't have made any promotion for her tour in France that's why we have made the "Kaki's French Community..." ;)

Jérôme :)

PS: Edouard, will you come with your wonderful Custom Legend???? ;)

I like what she does, but i'm not as optimisitc as some of you are regarding her career. She is a telented musician for sure. Maybe to talented for where the music industry is going right now. She's not enough comercial to me to be able to hang in the business as a front for a record label. I think that's why she's out of Sony. She's should go to a more apropriate label for her, like the World Music labels. There she should be able to have a long career and focus on her music without being bugged all the time by studio executives, businessmen who care only about numbers.

Sad to see that the music business nowadays is all about marketable singles, instead of quality albums.

My opinion of course.

My opinion too. However, it has been a long time since I went out and bought an album. Now I just buy the singles off iTunes/MusicMatch/etc. I am tired of buying CDs for $15 and having only 2-3 songs worth listening to.

All of my music is paid for. I didn't get into the file sharing piracy. However, I am not going to go out and waste my money on crap. I think the music industry should have joined the file sharing business, not try to snuff it out. I am more than happy to pay $1-2 per song rather that a whole CD that I dont like.

I too wish Kaki a long career. She just needs to play her Adamas more.

I agree with you that we should not be required to pay for 15 songs to get 2-3 'good' ones. On the other hand, I think the pace of life has turned things that many don't have or take the time the time to really listen intently to an entire album and become familiar with it enough to let it grow on you, or recognize any continuity song to song on an cd. I know that some of my favorite songs weren't my first picks initially on a cd, nor are they usually the "hits". If we are determining whether we like a song enough to buy it, by a 30 second clip, we may be missing out on something good.

One of my best friends used to buy a lot of cds. Now, with his own business, a family, house, etc., he tends to buy "per song" the ones he is bombarded with on the radio...and because they have been played so many times, whether it's a good song or not, he is familiar with it and has come to like it. Yet, I remind him of instances "back in the day" when the song he initially hated on a cd, after time, became a favorite.

I suppose, gone are the days when listening to music was actually an activity we do, rather than just background music while we do something else. People just don't have the time, and for many, just don't care. For me, I still like to dive into a cd, and am a small time "credits" junkie...I'm probably the only one who reads the jackets. I keep a boombox in my bathroom so that I can really focus on listening to a cd while I get ready in the morning.

It's just interesting to me. The music industry has changed dramatically, but so have we in our music buying and listening habits.

Speaking of Kaki in concert, here's an interesting hi-res slideshow put up by a fan who saw her on Saturday in Chicago:
