I have had this ovation fretless bass for years never knew what it was or even looked into it. I found out that it was made in 1969 it is a Typoon something..lol

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me, what if anything this thing is worth? how much did they sell for back in the day? how can I tell which one I have.. typoon I II or III?

Or where I can find out more information about it.

thanks,
Ken

Check Standing O\'s Gallery , look under "Electric Bass". Does it look like this?

Thanks for your help. Mine kind of looks like that but, I have a sound dampner? as the tail piece and I have 4 control knobs. It is fretless so, I take it that is a Typoon III ? mine looks just like the picture on the historical page for storm series august 69

The 2nd generation Typhoon's had same body size as the 6-strings, a bolted stop piece, dampener and 4 control knobs. They came in fretted (Typhoon IV) and fretless (Typhoon V). Here's a photo from Cc's gallery of a black eclipse finished one. Is yours like this? Dave

No it doesn't look like that at all. It pretty much looks like one Waskel posted but with the dampner and 4 knobs. it looks like the one here for aug 69 ovation

Yes, just like that but black. How much did you pay for that? or are they worth anything now? Also do you know of anywhere you can buy replacement parts?.. the pick-up cover is cracked on one of them.

Right on.. I knew somebody here could help me.. : )

In black, it should looks like this one:

Unfotunately, I'm not the owner of these instruments and I'm really not an expert!!
Dave and the others here are much better than me to help you.

The black one belongs to one of the OFC members (in Holland).

It's one of the later series made from guitar bodies. They probably go for a few hundred bucks. I just came across a pair of red original bass bodies, s/n B 542 and 8?? one fretted and one not. Cool basses.

Have to say it was cool to see my bass being posted my someone else. (Thanks Dave!)
Now that I know what the bridge cover looks like, does anyone have one for sale? Also were the original cases for the storm series just standard 335 types or were they a special Ovation case? Anyone have pics of the original case?
One more question. Both my Typhoon and my Eclipse have the faux Lyrachord finish. Are those more rare than standerd finishes?

Thanks

The cases were Geib cases, just the std issue for the time. They also used chipboard (archcraft) cases too. I think that the guitar bodies would be the ones with the bowl paint, I can't recall seeing one of the early bodies painted that way. I also recall that more bodies were finished in gloss colors than bowl paint.
