I'll bet it's more like $250 at the factory. Why not email John or Kim the pics and ask for their thoughts?

ouch, my condolences!

hard to tell from the pics, looks more like the glue held and took a layer of spruce with it, especially the way the top is pulled apart under the strings. That's what happened to the first incarnation of my Redwood... had to replace the entire top. LOL hey, there you go, think they'd do a new 1537 top with inlaid eppies? :)

OUCH! That's painful to look at. Check with the factory before you decide to sell.

I do n`t get it,my 1537 (year 1983)has the Bridge BOLTED with 2 machinescrews, judging by the photo`s,I can see 3 holes, the two ones flanking the Bridge are (probably) from the BridgePins, but that Third One in the middle surely must be from a machine bolt, when your guitar was "overhauled" perhaps that machinescrew was forgotten ? or was it pulled through the Top,and U just forgot to mention it ?

This is bizarre!

My Elite 1868 bridge failure was exactly two years ago today. (March 22, 2005)

Mitch's estimate of $400 is dead-on, that was the price that John B. from Ovation said they would have charged for the repair if I wasn't the original owner.

My cheapie O's all have dots on the bridge, covering bolts/screws, I assume.
I suppose that is a Good Thing.

vic,
the under-saddle pickup wire takes up one of the holes. i don't think it is visible in these pics. can't imagine what the larger center hole is for?

edit: just took a peek inside my 1537. there are definitely 3 pegs and two bridge pin holes, one of which the pickup wire also runs thru.

Lanaki- On the two O's that I have taken the saddle outta, that hole would be on the side. (The bass-side on 4861 and 1621. I'm guessing it's the same on all of 'em) That doesn't explain that big hole in the middle...

I'm just kibitzing...

the big hole in the middle is a larger diameter peg.

I believe that the larger hole is a locating hole for a holding fixture that was used to locate braces during bonding. There is probably a matching hole under the fingerboard.

Mitch,
Sorry to see that this happened. Are you sure you really want to part with this?

From the looks of the finish cracks in Mitch's pics in the gallery, I wonder if the finish has been holding that bridge on for years and finally let go.

my luthier said it could be because of long-time stress. He doesn't recommend keeping strings over .010 on any guitar older than 10 years for more that it is neccessary. He doesn't rule out using .012 or 0.13 strings for concerts, but not for daily use.

Many thanks to all here for your concerns, advice and thoughts on how/why this happened.

I've calmed down now that I've had another day to ponder all of this. :)

What really set me off was that just a few days before, the bridge on Andrew's 6778LX started to lift at the bottom, about 1/16". I got a return authorization to send it to the factory. Then THIS happened. I't hard to think rationally when two of the three six string acoustics in the house simultaneously need unexpected factory fixes for sort of the same problem.

I'm going to sent the 1537 to the factory and get a real estimate. I think that the top can be saved. I sure hope so because the wood is irreplaceable.

Maybe this will all turn out well in the end.

You can probably pick up the guitars at the tour like the last time.

my folklore is a 1974,its had 13's on it for going on a year now tuned to concert pitch,i repaired a 1971 1111 balladeer that had the top split in 3,head was compleatly severed and it was strung with 13's, hell i sent a 1983 1567 legend to canada left tuned to concert pitch and arived in perfect tune with no ill effects....maybe im just lucky....jason

My guess is that it has something to do with humidity. Living in California, humidity is not even something that I have to consider. All my guitars are out on the walls or on stands, all have .12's or .13's on them and all are just fine, from my 1968/69 Glen Campbell Deluxe Balladeer (.12's) to my 2006 GC 1627 reissue (.12's also).

Mitch, I'm glad you've taken a deep breath. I would have been at least as irritated as you were if not more so. But you know as well as I that the factory can work wonders.

Yup,sending it in is Sound Advice,But I just do n`t get it,I mean,my 1537 (1983) my 1617 (1972)and my 1618 (1983)all are equipped with machinescrews through the Bridge,1537 and 1617 have 2 ,and the 1618 has three !!They are Originally installed by Ovation,so the Dealer Assured me,for I remember asking about it,since I was suspicious of it to be a faulty/mediocre construction, and I had not seen that before on a guitar ( later I discovered that EKO,an Italian brand had done it too)It made sense to me though, the PULL of say 12-53`s are a Hefty 73 Kg.( about 150 Lbs.)So, When and WHY, did Ovation stop using an obviously Sound Idea, maybe SomeOne can Shed some Light on this,...AnyOne..

Vic
