I have a 1968 Tornado. This is a Framus/Ovation joint effort that may not have been a financial success but after almost 40 years proves to be an artistic success. Does anyone else have one. What are your thoughts?

Songsmith, welcome, you'll find quite a few people here have various storm models.

I have an Eclipse, which is basically a Thunderhead body that wasn't visually appealing so they sprayed it with black polane (textured bowl paint) and set it up with chrome Tornado hardware. It's a great player all these years later.

It's on my want list, too. I always wanted a Gibson ES335, had a Univox HR2 as a youth, but would rather have a Tornado, now that I've become an Ovation "collector." I prefer fan or fanatic.
I see that you post once every 4 years, so post a picture of your Tornado in 2011. We'll watch for it.

Thanks for the info. DVD, what is the maker of those pickups on your guitar? Are they Schaller? I just love my Tornado. I had problems with the neck joint for a while. The early models used wood screws instead of bolts which the later models used. It was really weak. I eventually had bolts and shims installed and it is now solid. I've been playing Ovation guitars since 1976 when I traded my Martin D-41 in on an Ovation Legend. I've had 3 Custom Legends and a Glenn Campbell 12 string since then, along with the Tornado. Ovation has been my guitar of choice both professionaly and at home in my living room. You know the feeling I'm sure.

Yes, they're the original Schaller pickups. At Tupperware's Ovation Gallery they are described as "1st generation Schaller high-output pickups." I also have a set of the 2nd generation style in my spares box, but I haven't gotten around to A/B'ing them yet.

If I can acquire only one more guitar, it WILL be a Thunderhead with gold hardware.

Preferably a Jerry Reed model. (hint, hint, wink, wink)

Did anyone else have a problem with the "bolt-on-neck"? Wood screws in the early Tornados and other Storm series guitars just didn't seem to have the longevity. Ovation made great necks and Framus made great bodies. The weak link was the inexperience of putting them together i.e. the neck joint. I think if it wasn't for the Japanese invasion of knock-offs the Ovation Storm series would have caught on and we'd all have 5 or 6 of them. Keep picking!

Songsmith, would you consider this a bolt or a wood screw? It only bites into wood. Is this the style you had trouble with?

One of my neck bolts/screws seems to be crossthreaded.. if I thread it right, it bites and holds securely. If I get it wrong, it just spins freely. The neck has been stable and once I got the action where I wanted, I haven't touched it.

(sorry for the lousy phone-cam shot...)

Early Storm Series guitars had WOOD screws. The above MACHINE screws came later and actually go into a bolt in the neck just like all the other solid body Ovations did after that time. I have never had issue with either really except that if you have to swap necks, it's a nightmare because they were all done by hand at the beginning and no two necks holes will line up.

Miles, thanks for the info. I looked in the hole for a bolt but didn't see one. I've got the neck stable and adjusted like I want, so I'm gonna take your (very experienced) word for it and leave well enough alone! :)

The neck portion is a blind-nut instead of a bolt.

Miles, My understanding was that only the long neck attachment had the bolts. The shorter attachment was always screws. Does this sound right?

It is my understanding the early ones have screws, and they later switched to bolts. I have not seen any examples over the years to disprove this. The only ones I have seen with screws are very early. All this means as this point is we have different information. Maybe someone else has some more to add.

No Miles, I think our information is the same (maybe I just stated it wrong). The early ones had the screws, that's for sure. And the early ones were the short necks. I thought that when they went to the long neck it was also at that time that they went to the bolts. I've never seen a short neck with anything other than screws, nor a long neck with anything other than bolts. Does that agree with your observations?

DVD, The picture you sent looks to me to be a bolt. There should be bolt sleeves inside the holes that the bolts screw into. It's kind of like the sheetrock anchoring system you use when you want to hang something on a wall and can't line up with a beam etc.. My guitar had wood screws like Mr.O said. I had a guitar tech guy I know replace the screws with bolts(and sleeves) and put shims in and removed that little adjusting gizmo(for neck angle). This is my understanding of it anyway. I know that the neck is now super strong and doesn't have the weak bendability that it once had. Before you could move the neck while playing as if it were a Bigsby tremelo. To make a short story even longer yours look like bolts not wood screws
