I just did a few calculations. The OFC membership is now almost to 5500. Some members have over 50 guitars, maybe over a hundred. Many have at least a dozen. Good money says every member owns at least one. If the average number owned per member was, say, a conservative four, then there are over 20,000 guitars represented in the OFC membership. This is rather significant. Is there any wonder why there is so much knowledge on these forums?

The thing i've noticed here is that we are well represeneted by people who use their hands, to somehow strike or stroke a string, whether its guitar, violen, keyboards or samisen.

Unless I'm missing it, we seem not to have too many people who also play either an instrument that depends on breath (voice excepted) or percussion. Which makes sense since we are guitarists, just an observation.

And if you assume that the average time playing for each person is 15 years, then that means we have 82,500 years of experience.

I would question the math. Yeah, 5500 people have registered but many are fly-bys. I would say the active membership is probably half of that. But none the less, yes we do collectively own a lot of guitars. Even if it's 10,000 guitars. At $1000. a pop that's $10 million dollars. Dave

I've noticed that out of the 5500 that around 700 have posted at least one message, that leaves a lot of lurkers out there.

Good estimate ProfessorBB. I have exactly 4 Ovations.

A lot of the non-posters have posted, but the numbers were reset in the directory a while back. So a LOT more than 700 have posted...

Right?

Tom, the graph looks pretty even til it gets to you and then it spikes right off the page. :)

I see a lot of Takamines in your list...have you looked at the EF75 threads? You look like a prime candidate for one of these.

The directory was reset in Oct of 2006. Since then 666 (hmmm) members have posted at least once in that 5 month period. I'd say that's a pretty good indicator of 'active' members.

(btw, only 219 of those have 50 or more posts.)

I love that picture... I think Lisa uses it as a screen saver on her phone too..

Back to the stats... regardless of the participation on the site, I think it's safe to assume, as was done, that anyone who registers likely does or did own at least one Ovation. The fact that many of us have not only more than one Ovation, but in general more than one guitar. That adds to even more experience.

Even at the more conservative, we collectively represent at least a couple of million dollars with of guitars. That's pretty impressive by any standard.
