I ran across an old Kustom amplifier the other day. This thing is well worn........100w 2 channel, reverb, flanger, tube type,2-12" speakers(celestion).Foot switch is broken so it won't change channels.ASking price is $150.00. Are parts still available for this dinosaur? and.......is the price too high? slydog

It's electronc so standard switches, lights, jacks and such should be available. The knobs may not match the original exactly, but if you can get it working, go for it.

Use your nose, sniff around inside the box. If it has a 'burnt' or really heavy 0zone smell (i.e. it's fried), see if he can drop the price by half. If the wires are carmelized(i.e. it's toast), take a walk.

I don't remember any kustoms being tube unless they were made in the last 10 years

kustom studio 4 valve.. solid wood cab, cane grill, no tuck and roll... there's one currently on the bay as well.

I told him to go for it if it fires up and doesn't smoke after 30 minutes or so at decent volume. he's taking the les paul and the vipertron up to put it through it's paces.

the wood cab and the celestions are worth what he's asking for it.

there's an amp guru down here (Lars) that loves old tube amps..

Not a bad deal if it is working and you like the tone. If it needs a rebuild ($200-$300 minimum based on my experience with a good tube amp tech), then you could end up with something that works well for maybe $500. For that price, you should be able to find better equipment.

An Old Amp. is EXACTLY THAT.....an Old Amp. ,and unless you can fix it yourself, consider carefully if it`s worth it, get an estimate done by a qualified repairman I just finished fixing a PEAVY M 2600 power amp. total cost : purchase price (25 USD) + 2 dollars worth of transistors....now working on a Laney Klipp combo, will have to change : 2 powercaps. + 2 smoothing caps. handfull transistors...if that`s gonna be all then total cost, incl. purchase will be about 80 USD...then a OPERA 415 active Speaker ( that one is problematic ,has an odd distortion )...so you see, unless you know how,or know someone who will do it dirt cheap, Buy New !!,...monthly payments, some performances, skip dinner a couple of times, and you`ll do fine ;)
