First-time poster here. I own an older model (solid top, 5-piece neck, acoustic) Celebrity shallow back guitar. My question though is about a used MM68 mandolin that I'm considering picking up.
On the back of the headstock is what appears to be a stamped serial #. There is also a different number on a piece of cellophane tape between the tuners. Both contain 6 digits. Is there any information that these numbers can tell me, such as the year the instrument was made?
I checked the reference section, but didn't know if those numbers applied only to guitars, or mandolins as well.

Location: Phoenix AZ | USA mandos can be dated using the same tables as the guitars. Go with the number engraved in the wood. Dave |

Location: TX | Well, now I'm depressed. Saw the mando at a pawn shop during lunch yesterday. Went back after work to test it plugged in and buy, but it had sold within the 4 hours. What are the odds? :confused:
Guess I'll keep checking the for sale forum. :( |

The mandolin that was bought from under me is now listed on ebay. The item location is in Texas, has the same string missing and same color. I figured has to be the same mando so I emailed seller, and sure enough the serial number is the same! Only problem is that the buy-it-now price ($835)is almost twice what the Pawn shop sold it for ($450) :mad:
I thought at first maybe one of the Pawn shop employees bought it after marking it down from $699.
I wouldn't mind so much if it was bought to be played, but only purpose was to turn it around for a profit. Oh well. Maybe I should freak out the seller with some of the details I know about the mando, like the fret wear on the first 3 frets, etc :D
Thanks for letting me vent.
Oh, and thanks to this site, found out that my guitar is an Artist model, not Celebrity. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Finding out you had an Artist instead of a Celebrity was worth the price of admission. Watch the auction. If you were willing to pay $450, just see if you can get it for that. |

The bidding on the mando starts at close to $800 - maybe I'll make an offer if it doesn't sell, but I'm done kicking myself. He was just quicker/smarter than I. |

MM68 serial # question
