Last night was "push your body way too far" night here (read: road bike night). We put in 35+ miles at an average mid-15mph pace. The sucky part was riding into the 15-20mph headwinds on the way out. Which shifted around to being a headwind on the way back (this happens every time), although it had died down to about 7-10mph. It didn't help that my riding partner thinks he's Floyd Landis and continually trying to 'drop' me...it's a freaking rail trail, not the TdF, man!
Anyway, we got back to the head end of the trail and the parking lot was jam packed for some nonsense going on downtown. I saw a car creeping along, and called out, "Car!" He saw it and did a track stand. As I was behind and to the right, I unclipped my right foot and slowed, continuing to watch the car and my buddy. He said, "OK" and started his right foot down...this was a signal I interpreted as "Go!" and mashed away. Which is when I saw the car lurch forward into my path and slam on the brakes. I hit my own brakes (they work GREAT!) but, due to the quick stop, my front wheel turned left. Ugh.
Now, remember where I said I unclipped my right foot? Guess which way your bike wants to go when the front wheel turns left and you're balancing in place. Through some weird gyroscopic principal, it wants to FALL OVER TO THE LEFT! Without having my left foot free (it did get free of the pedal just as my knee hit the asphalt), I couldn't stop the fall and did what anyone else would have done...put my hands out. Double ugh.
I wound up with a skinned knee, a scrape on my left shin, a cut on my inside right calf and a cut on the inside of my right thigh with an, oh, 2.5cm x 1.25cm flap of skin hanging off. And blood all over my bike and water bottles...ewwww. I picked myself up as "Floyd" was saying, "That's going to leave a mark, eh?" and just in time to see the elderly (late 60s, I'm thinking) driver laughing at me. :rolleyes:
The worst damage, though (other than my twisted left brifter, missing bar tape plug, and scratches in my pretty carbon parts) seems to have been to my right arm. After the fall, the base of my right palm hurt, and the underside of my arm, just up-stream from my wrist was numb. I also had a sharp ache going from the inside knob of my wrist to my elbow and a pain on the outside of my elbow.
This morning, I have a nice bruise on my palm, and the aforementioned other parts just ache. But, here's the real pisser...when I play the guitar (fingerstyle anyway), after about a minute the outside of my elbow aches something fierce. Like a bad toothache; not a sharp pain, just aching.
It's my own fault, I should have had both feet unclipped (I never do, because I'm lazy) and shouldn't have gone. But, man, this is going to put a serious cramp in my guitar playing. :mad:
And that is my off-topic post for today. I've now gotten more wounds from road biking than I have from mountain biking. |

PS - And I mean all this in the kindest way. An excellent point. My job centers around typing. That's all I do. Type, type, type...all frikkin' day long. Might explain the constant ache in my arm today. ;)
And this, "Now quit crying to us, suck it up and start playing." sounds suspiciously like my riding partner. You're one of those Type-A+, ultra-competitive types, too, aren't you!

If it still aches Monday, I'll mosey down to Radiology and chat up the help. In the mean time, there's always Motrin and beer. :rolleyes:
No worries about me hanging out in L&D, Phil. Five trips later, I'm pretty sure that's not someplace I want to be...for any reason.
