Greetings to all. Can anyone provide some info on the 5778-4ES? I just got one off Ebay, and it is in incredible condition, and sounds amazing. The neck feels heavier than my Elite Standard, and the fretboard appears to be ebony. It is just a wonderful instrument, but I would like to know how many were produced, how many years they were made, etc. If anyone has any info, please let me know.

Thank you!

It's an Engleman Spruce Elite with ebony fingerboard. No idea how many were made.

Funny to see that they picked up the Engelman Spruce again on the base of a Standard Elite.

In 1996 the factory started a Engelman Spruce project - a handful of prototypes were built - look at the link in my signature, there is one of them, based on a regular 1768, with matching headstock, LongNeck neck inlays, OPX and an ebony center stripe, called "1768 EMSX German Edition Vol. I".

Don't know why they never released them. The german distributor told me the idea for this prototypes grew in germany, but they would have been to expensive for the german market with being just a "regular" Elite - maybe they thought nobody would pay the extra money for an unpimped Elite.

Enjoy your guitar, I am sure it sounds great acoustically, with my Engelman Elite being one of the best Elites I have ever heard.

Kurt, and by the way: Welcome to the board.

Welcome to the board. Yes, Engelman Spruce is the main difference. I have a memory of that guitar having an ebony fretboard, too. Is that correct?

Thank you all for the info.

I think the fretboard is ebony. OPX electronics, gold hardware; the more I'm holding this, the more my other Elite gets jealous. This neck is almost classical-like in feel, and the tone is almost piano-like. My adjectives may be odd, but they are what comes to mind. Export only? The SN# is 1997 time frame. Koenig Kurt, are all of those yours!?! I was about incontinent with wonder at looking at your collection. Truly, truly impressive. To exhaust some quick thoughts, this guitar is bringing me back into the Ovation obsession. I had always figured you had to get a high end Ovation to get a good tone, as the Korean made ones usually (almost all the time) sound terrible. I've only played a few Adamas in the store, but the ME 12 string and the 6 string Adamas were just amazing, and on par with any $3k Taylor/Martin/Gibson. I toured the Martin factory some years back, and I played their whole showroom of guitars. The high end Ovations certainly can hang with them. I'm almost sad that this 'new' guitar for me will be hard to replicate. The picture you provided (Koenig) is identical to mine, but mine does not have the inlays or headstock stripe.

Ok, I'm exhausting the purpose of a quick post. If anyone sees another 5778 out there, please give a shout.

Thank you all. :)
