That's a great story. May doesn't need the job, so it is admirable that he has chosen to keep his mind keen as well as bend to the discipline required for producing a dissertation. Props!

Al, would your thesis also be on zodiak dust clouds? Isn't that pretty much what everybody was talking about at Woodstock?

Al - we would make the graduation ceremony an official OFC gathering and be there in force to cheer you on!

We would all get to see Al wear a graduation cap instead of a beret!!! :) :D

The question should now be, Will Al toss the cap up in the air after he receives his doctorate?

back in a different time I was enrolled in a major university's doctoral program for creative arts education.

due to a ton of problems including racism, sexism, wrong socioeconomic class, religious bias, they just plain didn't like the way I looked and a ton of other reasons, I was never allowed to finish my thesis. I came extremely close and if I was from a different socio economic level I would have sued and it would now be called Alpep University as opposed to Rutgers,(yes my case was that strong) but you only learn these things as time passes.

my topic was the distinction of school activities as "work" or "Play" by preschool and kindergarten students. The premise was that if an activity is presented as work it was given a higher priority in the child's mind and it may also cause some children to have a mental block against completion of the activity. Therefore if everything was looked at as a play activity you could eliminate bias against academic subjects.

well me and my "mentor" (and I use the term lightly) could not see eye to eye and with repeated attempts and finally I just demanded I was assigned a topic, I never went forward.

Life got in the way. I had a major motorcycle accident in 89 and sue almost lost her leg and I realized that it was not meant to be.

but alas, tis was another lifetime ago.
and with some of the comments about how I know nothing about kids etc and my strong feelings about parrental responsibility, maybe it is just all for the best.

now I remain

just an idiot that sells gear for a living.

WOW...that is a shame they stonewalled you.

I think that would have been a very interesting and thought provoking thesis.

I remember reading back in the '70's that BM had some astronomical research that had been published, even then.

I, too, bashed my head against The Ivory Tower of Traditional Research. I finally gave up, after a half-dozen proposals. Now, 25 years later, I am just "The WalMart Greeter of Mental Health" in south-central Washington State. No real regrets, either.

Zodiacal Dust Clouds ... whatever.

The question is what would happen if you smoke 'em.

You mean that being Polish isn't a good thing in New Jersey? Sometimes the presumption that you are dumb because of your ethnic background can be motivating. I'm glad my daughters didn't have to experience much discrimination.

Just so you know,
I am not bitter about that experience...well anymore. it took some time to get over it. Let's just say that RU will not call me for a donation any time soon.

it seems that we need to go down different paths and they end at different places, some good some bad.

Although I tease about it, I am rather pleased with the place these paths of my past life have left me.

If you drive, looking in the rear-view mirror, you lose control, and run off the road. Less traveled, but usually get stuck.
