deep vs shallow:

Did you also notice that shallows just sound BETTER when plugged in? I'm comparing my Elite 1868 to my AD-II, and with the pre shape down on the elite, a bit more bass and treble on the preamp, it's just the best acoustic sound I've ever heard (when plugged in).

Do you think it might be just the preamp? On the elite I have OP-24+C and on the Al Dimeola it's the optima pre-amp.

I wonder if it's just the preamp or the bowls has to do with it too. The elite sounds so much more "sharp" and.. just beautiful.

best acoustic amp:

I'm using CLARUS amplifier by acoustic image (acousticimg.com), with their CONTRA cabinet. - absolutely the best acoustic amp on the planet! those of you who are using roland/fender and even AER, should check it out.

I thought the shallows sounded "brighter" plugged in but not necessarily better. Plus any decent amp will control the tone to give you the sound you are looking for.

I find deep bowls more comfortable but I know others who feel just the opposite.

Personally, I also love the sound of a SSB: an 1868-5 was my main stage guitar for many years...OP-24 electronics and it always sounded great run directly into the PA...I couyld shape the sound w/ the onboard 3 band eq and live recordings from those days are a testament to how good it did sound. I have a "new" 1868-6 that is in mint condition and has a great unplugged sound as well...different guitars certainly have different voices and there are many who prefer the deeper bowls...I have several of those as well...but my favorite is still the SSB 1868-6 Elite 6 and its twin 1758-6 Elite 12.

AER kicks ass if it comes to amplifying classical and electro-classical guitars, aswell as voice. With electric/acoustic it sounds nice, but Roland AC60 (or sth like that) sounds better, and costs half of AER's price.
Also, if it comes to electroacoustic Marshall AS50D comes out really nice, especially for the price, just don't touch the chorus.
Currently i'm using Flextone III amp, which was designed for electric guitars, but i've managed to program few really great tones out of this combo, and with external cabinet attached (one speaker in combo, one external), my flextone sounds better on stage than friend's AER 60 throught PA.
And it's really versatile.
currently i use Legend 1617, Celeb CP2002, Yamaha FG411-12s with bband electronics (acoustic guitars) and Washburn X-50 (active EMG 81+85), Fender Telecaster and Epiphone Special 2 (on seymour duncan humbuckers) and for every guitar i have found settings that sound really well.

I'm using either an Acoustic Image Coda-R or a Bose PAS system depending on venue and I really love them both.

The Coda is basically a Clarus built into one of their speaker cabs.

Tonight I was practicing on my 1881 and thinking how nice the bottom end sounded. Some of it has to do with the .54 or .56 E string that I always use anymore, but my ex also feels that the bottom end on the shallow bowl Adamas is more than plenty for her, plugged or unplugged.

However my deep bowl 1587 is the one that goes on stage with me.

Oddly enough, I used to dislike the feel of the deep bowls, but now it doesn't really matter which one I'm using as far as comfort is concerned.

Right on time! Before I turned-on the computer, I was just playing my 4861 .
I don't play this often enough.
[It's Korean, but it do have a solid top]
It sounds good ala cart, and it has an OP24+ which is real nice plugged-in.
I have a couple of mid-depths, (none of my deep-bowls plug in) but the pre-amp on this makes it sound real distinctive, with great control.

Forgive me, but sometimes I forget how good this little thing sounds. :D

Bowl depth is one factor; quality of the top is another, as is the uniquely 'broken in' quality of the top. I've gone through numerous SSBs my quest for the ONE to use live, and the Custom Legend I have now really suits me. We like to make generalizations, but each guitar has a unique voice, doesn't it?

I sometimes play friends DB's, but my guitars are SSB's that i use mostly for comfort reasons.
And i am very happy with the sound of both 1868 and 1881. The 1881 has more basses, so i play some songs with the Elite and others with the Adamas. Unplugged, differences with DB are sometimes noticeable, sometimes not, i agree with Paul when he says the top is another factor.
Plugged, there are no more differences with DB.
I have an AER Alpha 40W which is just fine for my use, however i am impressed by the sound of the little Schertler David 80W.

I noticed a substaintial difference both plugged in or unpluged.
The SSB is more of "00" size tradition guitar in sound. DB is more of a Drednaught sound.
