I found a 1537 that was made in '84 and has a cedar top instead of spruce. I read in another forum that eventually cedar starts to deteriorate...is this true? Does anyone have any experience with cedar tops over 20 years old? Any feedback is well appreciated. Thanks.

You should send that guitar to me so I can evaluate it...

Cedar is very stable.... if well cared for, it'll still be around after we are gone.

Ha ha ha...that`ll teach ya` not to read other forums,I`ve got a Höfner classical, cedar top,30 yrs. old,it does have a crack on the top,but that`s because it`s top consists of bookmatched halves, ergo it`s the glue that has loosened, not the wood,..bracing is still holding it together,it sounds Fine !! btw ,it looks as if it has seen the dustbin very often,it`s had a "hard life"..most classical guitars have a cedar top, virtually all Spanish guitars have, and the Spanish know a thing or two about how to make guitars,I`ve seen a few that were over a hundred years old ,no problems whatsoever,All with Cedar Top`s..!!

BTW..Welcome to the Odd Feverish Cult :)

My only cedar topped guitar isn't quite 20 yet, but it's perfect. As Vic said, those Spaniards know how to make guitars and most are cedar. It's a little warmer sound. If it's in good shape after 23 years, what are you worried about? Buy it.

Cedar creates a great warm sound. That 1537 already has a great sound, so the cedar top will probably make it even warmer. I've had a lot of classicals with cedar tops also, with virtually no problems. And I wouldn't trade my Cedar Elite for anything. I can also tell you that We have a Mill Pond here that has cedar stumps in it that have been there for at least 200+ years, and they are still strong.

I've had a couple of cedar topped git's as well and loved every one of them. Now I've got a spruce topped 1537 and love that. A cedar topped 1537? Yeah, baby...

Here are some pic of my cedar top 1537X. The top is really more even in color than what it appears.

There's a reason why most fence material is made out of cedar. The stuff resists decay and deterioration better than a lot of other woods. I think most bugs hate it. I have a 20+ year old uncovered pile of it in the back 40. It is still strong and perfect for wood fires. Smells great when burning, too. I guess if you don't want bugs in your bowl, nor moths for sure, and you want the top to hold up to the elements in the event you store it on top of the wood pile for 20 years, you can't go wrong with cedar.

Did you ever check the bracing on that guitar to see if it is the same as a regular elite? Does it also have a shallow or medium bowl? It doesn't look like the deep bowl.

My Taylor has a cedar top and its one of the few Taylors that sounds as good as anything out there.

That's a really nice guitar but it really isn't a 1537. I know that's what the lable says but a 1537 is deep and spruce. Yours is mid and a nylon string, which explains the cedar. It's a totally custom guitar. There were a handful of different stlye nylons made over that time period. I have a super shallow one and I don't recall if it's 12 or 14.
Enjoy it.
