Used from Guitar Center. Serial 30604x seems to fall into the 1984 Elites only on Ovation Tribute.

Not in bad shape; frets need leveling (some dents on the cowboy chord frets), and a piece of binding missing on the neck, treble side, just on the first fret.

Anyone have a small piece of binding, about 2 inches, or tell me where to buy some?

Randy.

Will post pictures this weekend. Also, it came in a non-Ovation case that someone painted the Ovation logo on (quiet well), and had a Standing Ovation accessory. I took the velcro off the bowl as I won't use the standing ovation thingee.

Congratulations on the find and the addition to your already impressive stable! I'm sure you'll get the minor details patched up in no time.

Randy, the tricky issue for the binding patch will be the color match. The binding tends to get darker as it ages, or what finish has been applied to it. And, disguising the butt joint requires some fastidiousness, also. You may just want to replace the binding on both sides. Good exercise for us shadetree luthiers!

I don't think I have the skill or tools to replace the whole binding (been reading threads about it); was hoping to find a piece of discarded binding that had been replaced (color should match enough as it's on the bottom; my issue is it's the feel of the missing binding).

I am getting an occasional snap-crackle-pop when plugged in; I'll be playing it unplugged mostly, so no rush figuring that out. It's got to be either the pickup, the jack or the preamp, so I'll start with the jack and all the plug connections (pickup to the preamp), then progress to the pickup next. Already put in a fresh 9v.

Nice. Happy NGD. Snap-crackle-pop may go away with contact cleaner. I would start looking at the jack socket and the connections there.

I don't have the knobs yet for the stacked-knob preamp, and if I tap the shaft I can make it crackle. We'll see if the knobs (coming in a couple days) make that better.

How does a fret get dented? I have an image in my head now of some OFC regulars "sword fighting" with their guitars.

Looks cool.

@aacxx22 - >>>How does a fret get dented?<<<

Fret wear is a long-accumulating impression, not a dent from a sudden occurrence. After being pressed down thousands and thousand of times the string will eventually make a divot into the fret. Depending on the severity, sometimes minor fret wear can be leveled with a tool, and the guitar will still play nicely without buzzing against adjacent frets.. but sometimes the damaged fret(s) must be replaced if the impression dent is too deep to be leveled in height for the string to still clear the adjacent, un-worn frets.

Tracked the problem to the preamp, and I don't feel like spending to replace it (and the binding issue), so I returned it. And found a 70's 1117 at the local Music Go Round that has perfect binding, much lighter (no electronics). It's sunburst (I prefer natural as I already have a sunburst 1621) but it's in pretty nice shape, at the same price as the returned one.

Sometimes the OFC rings like a 12-step program that nobody ever seems to get past around the 3rd step of. So congratulations on your current failure.. err.. success. Looks nice! What year issue is it?

It will certainly sound significantly different than the Legend you returned with its different bracing.

Yes, I think the 84 probably had A bracing, but the 78 has a lighter neck, hand laid (lighter) bowl and no electronics (lighter again).
