Walter Becker, co-founder (with Donald Fagen) of Steely Dan, owned one of the world’s largest and most diverse collections of guitars. After his death, in 2017, the collection sold intact to one buyer for $3.3 million. In a 1994 interview with Guitar Player Magazine, when asked about his vast collection, he answered that it stemmed from what he liked to call Guitar Acquisition Syndrome, or GAS, for short-- and hence, according to the magazine, was then coined to begin its popular usage as we know it. I studied Becker for decades, and never knew of this as being the term’s origin and cultural proliferation; though in hindsight seems quite typical of his personality and repartee. |
