Most companies go through identifiable periods or eras, which, based in fact or not, define the design, construction, and (to a degree) the desirability of their products.

For example, Gibson acoustics in the late 60s were known for skinny necks. When Norlin took over in 1969 or so, many changes were made in the 70s that people didn't like (me included, $0.02). The mid 80s Nashville models were better but not great. Bozeman has boosted Gibson back and even they have had a couple speed bumps along the way, maybe not so much QC but predictable neck shape, etc.

Likewise for Fender, with the fabled Pre-CBS, CBS, Post-CBS, Pre-CNC, Smith Era, and the "Is it really US made or is it made in Mexico but strung up in California and then called American because I basically can't believe anything those lying b@stards say anymore" era (which is pretty much the last 10 years or so.....)

Whew. Sorry.

So this question is honest and wide eyed.... Has Ovation gone through similar eras?

Really? How come I rarely see a new Gibson acoustic that doesn't need a neck reset straight out of it's factory shipping carton?

early and mid nineties guitars did not sound as good acoustically as they should have.
they sound much better now.
most I think will agree the early hand laid bowls were good and many like the skinny neck pre K bar guitars.

There's lots of exceptions. For me the "golden era" of ovations was pre-1970. Those old hand laid bowls, X and A braced acoustic only guitars really sounded good to my ears. The recent LX stuff is again pretty nice. Dave

Ovation seems to go thru 10 year cycles. The 60's were a great time. The 70's weren't. The 80's were a great time. The 90's weren't. The 2000's are a great time.....

There are exceptions to this and I'm talking quality of the guitar's sound, not necessarily the number of people playing them.

There are ups and downs and you all can sort those out. I will add that some of the better guitars are being produced now. We'll see if history remembers it that way.

I'm not nearly as knowledgeable of the history of Ovations as everyone else here, but it does seem to me that the LX series represented a big step forward.

Depending on how you look at it, the LX is either a big step forward or a big step back.....

I could never like the K-bar necks after playing Gertrude; I know that they have graced many, many wonderful guitars, but I will never like them. My hands are just too small, and I always feel like the necks are fighting me instead of cooperating. (The level I play on, I need all the help I can get.) They're just not my favorite flavor of ice cream, I guess. I was happy when the LXs came out with the truss rods.
