Well... my unexpected vacation (i.e. unemployment) ends in 2 weeks. I was able to secure a position that pays the same as the old one. It is a much smaller company and it is based in Lannion, France.

It looks like my first 2 weeks on the job will be spent in France. Does anyone have any experience with the Rosetta Stone (or any other) language learning software? I took French in high school, but that was about 30 years ago. Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Mike

Maybe they hired you because they want to speak English. Are going to work from home eventually?

Captain - yes, I'll be working out of my home. I'll have the same phone, fax, etc. as I've had for the last few jobs.

I'm pretty sure the people that work for the company know english, I'd like to learn French for the times when I'm not at the company.

CL, from my experience with French people, most of them speak english, many of them know this language very good, but they really don't like to speak english. I've noticed it's dependant on region. on the north of France, i didn't had any problems with communicating with them in english, but on the south regions... it was really hard to communicate with them. In shops, markets etc, i was talking to them in english, and receiving responses in french. Not always polite ones (i speak a little French too).

CL,I've only been to Paris, but from experience, if you order (food) in English, you'll pay more, so make sure you know how to order your favorites and basics in French

A friend just started learning Japanese with Rosetta Stone and I tried it out.

My personal take on it is a program that is probably pretty good for learning to talk, but not as valuable for reading/writing.

My French is absolutely horrible. In my first attempt to use a menu in Lyon, I ended up with eggs on a pizza. My efforts to request butter at one of those outdoor bread stands kept coming across as a botched up English version of burro. French is a beautiful classical language. I just don't have an ear for it. I found the young people (mostly student age and young adults) to be very helpful. The older folks are less tolerant of visitors who can't speak the language. Museum volunteers are the most helpful. The cab drivers in Paris were the worse.
