I've been watching this 1718 Elite on the bay for a few days now, and I'm surprised it's gotten 0 bids. I would think an opening bid of $400 isn't unreasonable for a deep-bowl Elite. Or is a 1718 Ovation's "Edsel"? Just curious.

I'm watching it too. In my experience selling on eBay, I always do better with a quality guitar when I start at $1.00 without a reserve than when I start at several hundred. I don't know for sure why. But I bet if this seller had started that way and put the words NO RESERVE in big capital letters in the item title, it would be at least $400 by now.

If I hadn't just bought my 1688, it would be mine if possible...I am surprised as well...its a great guitar and I have its twin right here in the case:

I agree that the opening bid is reasonable. It just isn't the most popular Elite model. The cutaways seem to sell better, but non-cut full bodied guitars have better natural tone, at least in theory. There are exceptions, because each guitar is different. This one looks good.

What happens along the way is meaningless. The only important amount is what the auction finishes at. Some auctions will immediately attract a high bidder. Others will sit idle and fbe sniped at the last moment. It has nothing to do with the instrument in question, just the particular bidding habits of those interested init. Dave

Good to know for future reference. I like the looks of the full body elites. If I hadn't just bought a deep-bowl, non-cut legend I'd be all over this one. As it is SWMBO keeps asking which one of my inventory is the "one-out" I promised!

I'm looking at this and thinking...
Couldn't this person have sprung for larger photos?
I mean... 12 photos, the gallery, and large photo slide-show is a $1.50!
You're selling a damn 1718 Elite!
Have some damn class.

I'm also pissed cuz I want it, but can't afford it!

As a veteran of about 1,100 e-bay transactions, I am not suprised at the posted bid progress so far. I know there are snipers in the trees waiting for the closing seconds to throw in their bids, manually or through one of the sniping services. Why creep-up the price early when you can swoop in and maybe get a bargain at the finish line?

I don't completely understand why, but now that I've started using "sniping" techniques, the auctions I win, I get for less than my max bids. In the old days, I would see something on ebay I wanted, and bid the amount I'm willing to pay, and would constantly get outbid. With sniping, it works out a lot better for me as a buyer.

I used to think sniping was annoying, but if you cant beat em, join em.

As for the guitar - I agree that the listing should have better pics. It is a beautiful guitar though.
