All of a sudden my 1615 has quit playing amplified. I tried the obvious (changed the battery, checked for broken wires to/from the jack, battery compartment, pickup & pre-amp 'black box'). Here are my options:

1. Disassemble the whole thing and test the circuitry (mainly just the wire connections) with a VOM - does anybody know what voltage/resistance I should be getting from the different connections?

2. Mothership trip.

3. Replace the electronics with an OP50 like this one and others like it that've been floating on the 'bay recently. Is this possible with the existing pickup, assuming it's still good? I'm not afraid of routing out a hole in the body for a new pre-amp.

Any and all suggestions/advice will be greatly appreciated.

EDIT - meant OP-Pro, not OP50

Not to belabor the obvious, but... have you tested everything downstream from the guitar (cable, any effects, amp...)?

Like da Wabbit says, ensure that the output cable work on another instrument.

My first suspect would be the contacts through the Piezo Pickup. Do a continuity check, aka the voltage flows through.

Wabbit: ... have you tested everything downstream from the guitar (cable, any effects, amp...)?
Sorry, forgot to include that in the obvious first steps. Yes, the same cable and amp work just fine on all my other O's.

MWoody:...contacts through the Piezo Pickup. Do a continuity check, aka the voltage flows through.
Should there be voltage flowing thru the pickup all the time, or only outflow voltage when string(s) are plucked?

Never thought about if there's no current when no strumming ...
I think what the woodmeister is saying is check the continuity at each junction ... ie the jack, wires leading to the jack, the op, the wires out of the op etc. You'll need one of those meter things with a probe on either end. Your local guitar tech will have one.

Continuity (flow) from the male 3.5 mm jack to the cable/shield cover.

Your basic multimeter set at a low setting. I am not an electrotrician so my words are lacking.

We're all just waiting for the electrician... or someone like him.

i don't know if it will help, but functional op24+ takes about 10mA out of 9v battery.

Thanks for the suggestions - time to dust off my old multimeter and take apart a geetar. It'll be a good excuse to re-string (gawd I hate stringing & tuning a 12)

Results of electronics analysis: after removing the pre-amp black box, battery compartment,
jack and piezo pickup, I held the leads of my multimeter to the following and got these readings:

Battery output as measured at the pre-amp circuit board = 8.95V

Volume pot as measured at the pre-amp circuit board:

outer pins 114.9 kOhms, no change when rotating pot.

left pin (arbitrary) to center pin ranged from 0 to 114.8 kOhms when rotating pot from min to max.

center pin to right pin ranged from 114.9 kOhms to 0 when rotating pot from min to max.

Jack - 3 leads, red, black and silver (bare):

pot turned to minimum:

red X black: 0 Ohms, 0 mV

red X silver: 0 Ohms, 0 mV

black X silver: 0 Ohms, 0 mV

pot turned to maximum:

red X black: 95.2 kOhms, 20 mV

red X silver: 94.7 kOhms, 18 mV

black X silver: 0 Ohms, 0 mV

Piezo pickup - 6 mV, infinite resistance

That last suggests no continuity in the pickup. Put it all back together and no joy. Time to call JB or KK?

True, but then I would've missed out on the fun of taking it apart and seeing how it's all put together. :) (and it was fun)

Talked to John - new pickup ships tomorrow. Many, including me, have said it before, but it deserves repeating - John and Kim define what customer service should be.
