I remember his tv show. He'd take his Ovation 1613 and go in the audience. Somebody would give a line and he would make up a short song right there. It may have been a set up, but at the time, it was impressive......

A respectful voice and personality from a time when mainstream music still had respectful voices and personalities.
I saw him in Las Vegas with a three drink minimum. Mine were three vodka-Collins lined up on the table, and I still think of him whenever I have that combo. Great show (Nancy Sinatra opened) and a fun night. Thanks, Mac.

I worked a as a waiter at Harrah's Lake Tahoe South Shore Room for 15 years during the 70's-80's. Saw him on many occasions, two shows a night. Always looked forward to seeing what Ovation he'd be playing.

First, Mac was a good man.
As I've mentioned here before, Billy Strange (Wrecking Crew) was my boss... and bonus father. Mac was always a shadow figure in my life because of his association with Billy.
It's an interesting story. Billy was riding high in the late 60's. His partnership with Nancy Sinatra (Boots was a mega-hit) as well as his partnership with Elvis, at the time, arranging films and playing on sessions.
Mac came to him as a song plugger for a publishing group. Bringing songs they'd hope Billy and Nancy would consider recording. Billy didn't like what Mac was delivering... but conversation lead to Mac saying he had unsigned songs of his own.
He proceeded to play "Watchin' Scotty Grow", "Something's Burning", "In the Getto"...
Billy was blown away and he and Nancy started a publishing company just for Mac. Within a year, they had multiple number ones. Mac and Billy wrote "Little Less Conversation" and "Memories" for Elvis.
The beginning of an era... and career.
Sad to see Mac gone.
He came to our Songwriters festival last year, and as always... he wowed and won hearts.
Rest In Peace, Mac.

I've been playing the Frank Brown Songwriters festival since 95. Last year we finally talked Mac into joining us.
