PS

Here is a "GUITAR-OGRAPHY"
of John's axes. Here the ID
is Custom Legend 1719-30 CM

But I know that John switched
to nylon Ovation BEFORE "Friday
Night" -- so this may not be
authoritative.

I agree it's one of the great acoustic sounds - but his Wechters, Our Lady and Marielle, sound a million times better. For me ADM's Ovation sound was always better than JM's steel sound. Just my opinion. And let's not forget Larry Coryell's great sound on Meeting of the Spirits.

Interesting that it doesn't mention the time machine he must have had in order to play a Custom Legend in 1970, several years before they were produced!

That's why I asked about anachronism in my first post. I swear I've seen photos of JM on his first O and it is NOT "electric": no electronics. I bet it's a Balladeer.

Our Frechie scholar also omits to note that throughout the 80s JM played nylon O's off and on. On the later Trio recordings as well as on "Friday Night" he did NOT play a steel string Ovation Legend. In fact, for me, the high point of JMs career is Shakti and the early Trio stuff. Then he settles in to less distinctive nylon romance....

Schroeder: Larry's sound on "Meeting of the Sprits" is terrible. Are you being sarcastic? As for JM, "My Goal's Beyond" sports very nice tone indeed. The Wechters, I agree, are breathtaking on early Shakti.

You don't like Larry's "overdrive"? Shame on you.

Actually I love Larry in general. Favorites include "The Restful Mind", "Spaces" and his work with Catherine. But in 1979 he was in a drunken rut. His playing suffered and so did his tone. JUST LOOK at the video: he is stoned and misses cues. A few months later he was booted out and Al DiMeola was brought on board. This was actually one of Larry's worst cosmic moments and finally kicked him in the ass enough to quit drinking. Really!

I can tell you that the fretboard in the second video (c/o around the 4 minute mark) is identical to my 1612L. I don't know much about the guitar, but I found this thread looking for info on the preamp used in it. Mine appears to be heading south... I can't get rid of the distortion... even with a new battery! Any of you experts have any thoughts?

2nd video is a Custom Balladeer, and it is late 70s. [/QB]
Yup... it's identical to my 1612, except mines a lefty (1612L)

So, did the very early Legends NOT have the standard Legend/Deacon inlays? but Deluxe Balladeer inlays with a bound neck?

Nobody can understand queens english ...
But Paul, you failed to express it in your usually "witty" and "bold" way; While I am not trying to encourage, there are those who may be agast that it is without your usual "color" and "phrasing"...lol

I've been to Queens. They don't speak English there. I was aghast (or a gast or a guest or whatever).
