Hello Ovation fans,

I just registered and Arthur advised me to post this thread on this part of the forum.

The reason I am posting here is that I know hardly anything on Ovation guitars and I am trying to find information on a guitar I recently got in a trade: a 1999 Ovation Balladeer Special S 771-W.

Serial number is in the 539 000 range and I found this dates the guitar back to 1999. I also know it's American made as it says so on the inside label. The preamp is the op24+ model.

I see secondhand Ovations Balladeer ranging from $250 to $750 depending on specificities I don't understand.

Could someone help me? In particular:
- Is my guitar a high end guitar or not?
- Is it sought after?
- As it is in good condition, what would be a reasonable resale value?

Many thanks for the support.

Stephane

I believe the the S 771 model was one of the least expensive models made in New Hartford ct. I purchased one from Ebay about 8 years ago for $300. dollars with a mint case included.

Before the factory closed I had them do a neck reset and upgrade the pickup and bridge pin - Now it's one of my favorite go to guitars, Not sure what the W stands for - Most likely what Arthur said. Adam.

Your guitar is in fact a model that was made exclusively for sale by Guitar Centers. They were relatively plain, no fret markers, and had a red rosette, not like the standard Balladeer. The top is Sitka spruce. Should have the bolt-on neck (as opposed to the glued in neck).

It is a good guitar, they sounded good plugged in (I assume the OP-24 preamp is working. With the original hard shell case should go for about $375-$425 in todays market.

They are better guitars than the Celebrity series.

Thanks Ohiopicker,

The preamp is working but I don't think it's a bolt-on neck (as in Fender bolt-on neck way of construction, with 4 screws and a neck plate on the body).

The neck is glued on the guitar but there is clearly a bolt that seems to hold the neck to the body, inside of the guitar. This bolt is in the inside of the guitar and you can see it though the sound hole (see attached pictures). Again, being totally ignorant about Ovation, this could be their way of making a bolt-on neck. Would that be a bolt-on neck, according to Ovation's way of constructions?

That IS a bolt-on neck.
That big silver bolt-head... There should be two of them in there.
