It seems like yesterday. Jaco Pastorius died 20 years ago today, September 21, 1987.
It was 20 years ago today that Jaco Pastorius was tragically taken away from us. Even though he only lived 35 years he still left us with so many gifts. His music..his playing..they will live on forever. He accomplished the ultimate goal of every musician. He influences, he inspires, and he has changed peoples lives. For these things he will always be celebrated. But September 21st will always be a sad day for most people who knew or even heard of Jaco Pastorius. It is the day we all lost the best bass player that this planet will ever know. More importantly, we lost a son. We lost a brother. We lost a father of four children. We lost a friend....We love you and miss you Jaco!!

| I've been listening almost daily to Bright Size Life for the last couple of weeks. It was Pat Metheny's first solo album and introduced the world to Jaco. Jaco had just been discovered by Gary Burton and invited into his group, where a very young PM was already a member. They absloutely fly when they play together - the album is just a trio recording with no overdubs. Just breathtaking.
They both went on to do a lot more stuff (I love Jaco's big band arrangements and orchestrations) and I'm sure they would think (leastways if Jaco was still here) that their first recording had long been surpassed. But it would be one of my 10 all time favourite recordings.
Jaco was a good friend of Bireli Lagrene as well and taught hm how to play bass, which he still does Jaco-style in concert.
Jaco's influence was enormous - I would agree with al that there's not been a better electric player. But if you include the bull fiddle there's been one or two down the years.... |

Location: New Jersey, USA | Jaco was not the absolute end-all of electric bass players, but he sure did create a singularly unique and fantastic sound that will be emulated forever. The anniversary of his passing is, of course, just a short time after the actual passing of his fellow Weather Report colleague Joe Zawinul. Let's spin Heavy Weather and Black Market in their honor.
And I agree about Bright Size Life... early passionate music is often among the best offerings from any artist. |
