They are both between 10-15 years old; one cost about $200.00 new, the other about $400.00. (They were bought about the same time--very similar, difference of upgrades.) I am really impressed with the $400.00 one; strings ride low to the neck, very playable all the way up. The closest thing to an Ovation neck I've ever played. Beautifully made, too. It has a really resonant sound, yet sweet and mellow. [My friend played Jewel, and loved her--she's thinking of getting a shallow LX now.] :-) The $200.00 one needs to have the neck tweaked; the strings are way too high, but a very nice sound, too. A good sampling. --Karen

Sure tone, playability all come in, but it's that consistent ability to repeat it, instrument after instrument. This is actually one of Taylors strengths... personally I don't like their sound, but ya really can't knock the fit and finish and that their "voice" is pretty consistent. So what you say? Well a friend of mine has a Fender acoustic. Yeah that was my first reaction till I played it. The guitar is really really nice. I've played others, don't know why his is so different, I'm sure a few others sound great, but I haven't heard them. Same with Yamaha. I have heard some really hollow sounding Yamaha's, like it's their sound. But, I guess because of sheer numbers, I have heard some that are fantastic. One of Ovations true strong points. Granted their "voice" has changed over the years, but if you take several new guitars or the same model (hard to do anywhere but the factory) they are pretty consistent in everything from fitment to tone.

Then Mrs. Ackerman put an Ovation in my hands, and made me an offer I couldn't refuse. I've played some REALLY nice Yamaha's recently. There's a guy who plays the same circuit of bars that I do, and his stands out in my mind as really nice one. Y'just have t'shop around and physically Try B4 You Buy t'find one that just has all of the right facets in proper alignment. I'd be a bit reticent of just grabbing one off MusiciansFriend without playing it first . . .

At the time I just knew that 34 years down the road the Ovation Fan Club would be much cooler that the Yamaha Fan Club so I went with the Balladeer. True story.

Something wierd about the necks. Karen, stop messing with these things and save up for an Adamas. Find the one you really like and you won't have to worry about GAS anymore. You deserve one.

I was happy for my friend, though, because she has such a nice guitar to play. :) I haven't played too many of the Adamii--some of them had the soft "V" neck, which I found to be uncomfortable for my small hands; I really like Robbie's 2080, but it is also too deep for me now. :( I would need to find a super-shallow 6 string, "C"-shaped neck to be tempted by one at all. ;) --Karen

(At least I'd know what to look for--I'm not too fluent in "Adamas-speak" yet.) --Karen
