Location: Des Moines, Iowa | Well, it turns out that Al wasn't on vacation, it was my email or his email or the servers between Jersey and the middle of nowhere in the middle of the country. He sent me an email that was time stamped for 2:37 PM, but I didn't get it until nearly 8 PM my time, which is an hour earlier...
BUT I digress... we just sealed the deal and this baby is on it's way to me (or will be in the morning):

I couldn't pass it up and it's all Pure Adamas. It's got the carbon fiber top, the Adamas Suspended Top, non-cutaway deep bowl, ornamental bridge and head stock that is distinctly Adamas. I do enjoy collecting a few Ovation guitars and would love to have even half of the collections that some of you here enjoy, but I think this guitar might just quench my thirst for a little while... OR quite awhile.
Thanks to Al at Lost Art/Vintage Instruments for a nice deal and thanks to all the folks here at OFC for tolerating this here SillyLittleBoy and helping to keep my Ovation love alive and even educate me just a bit.

It may be the best guitar you will ever own.
Don't think i noticed the model year of your guitar, but consider this... i recently purchased a NOS 2012 Taylor 810 which is their top of the line series... and my 35-year old 1681 is still the king... and believe me - that Taylor aint no slouch...
You are really going to enjoy that guitar (and post those pics!!!),

Location: Des Moines, Iowa | Yes, Al did take very good care of me. So, I have to start out with a shout out to Al and his Lost Art/Vintage Instruments. His customer service was excellent and it arrived promptly and was well packed without a chance of being damaged in any way. It was priced to move or as Al stated at least a couple of times, "I stole this guitar." I'm sure glad I had the money when his offer to steal it from him came along.
I didn't imagine I'd get a full-blown (so to speak) Adamas guitar. I thought maybe I'd end up with a less adorned but nice sounding version, but this baby had all the nice adornments in the way of the fancy carved headstock and bridge. It had the carbon fiber top and it was an AST top. It had the deep bowl without cut-away (more bowl and sound board), so it pretty much had all the features I had hoped (dreamed) of getting and...
After I got it all unpacked and the strings tightened back up and tuned, I got to see, hear, and feel the full beauty of it. Obviously what one person thinks is an amazing sounding and playing guitar might not be the same as another person's "favorite" guitar, thought I can't imagine anyone not thinking an Adamas isn't ONE of the best. I'm an Ovation Fan.. HUGE fan and have been for like 30-35 years. It's not just the sound, but also the way they feel, the way they play, the easy action and speed, and it don't hurt that they look really beautiful AND unique. Nothing else looks like an Ovation and you really don't see anyone trying to copy an Ovation or make a knock-off. My first Ovation-type guitar was what I thought was some Ovation knock-off, because they'd copied the bowl and the headstock was an exact copy of an Ovation. It wasn't until years later that I discovered my 12-string Matrix guitar wasn't a knock-off, it was made by Ovation.
But I digress... I think my delay in posting my pics and story probably speaks to my distraction with this new toy. I really love the sound of it, which fits well with my playing style. The amazing sustain and deep sound the bowl and top provide are PERFECT.... for me! How anyone can think differently, I certainly don't know how anyone could. One of my standards in judging the quality of a guitar is how well it tunes up. I've got more musical equipment than I've got talent, but I've got a very sensitive ear and if a guitar (or my guitar) is out of tune, then I can tell right away. That Matrix guitar I mentioned was a bear to get tuned right. I've had two 12-string guitars (Matrix and Epiphone) and would always get frustrated with trying to get all 12-strings tuned up properly and would end up yanking the extra 6-strings off.
All of my Ovations tune up real nice and this Adamas... tunes up THE BEST!

But...does anyone have experiences with the difference in sound between the vintage 1687 (like mine) and the new one (like SLB´s)? I had a newer Adamas GT before but I sold it, I prefer the old one...just like the old CL. |
