Hello, I'm a new member who recently "discovered" Ovation guitars. I'm an empty-nester and now have time to try to learn how to play. I had a Alvarez MIJ that I had to part with so I needed something to play. I really wanted something made in the USA. I stumbled across the Ovation factory story and became fascinated. I was able to find and purchase a 1972 1617-4 Legend in nice shape. I played it for a month or so and started to get some buzz on the low E string. I took it to a respected luthier who leveled the frets and replaced the nut. Although he is not a huge Ovation fan, he
really loved the guitar. He advised me to get a better case and never sell it. I'm torn between trying to track down a vintage brown case or buying a new 9158-0. Does anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks for allowing me to join the group.

The 9158 (if you can find one) is lighter than many of the old brown cases.
The weight does vary from case-to-case.
The 8158 is lighter still.
Not all cases listed a 9158 are really 9158.
A 9158 sez "Ovation" on the inside fur.
Often on eBay and other less reputable sellers are selling old 8158's as 9158's because they have the Metal Logo on the outside of the case.
Nowadays the new 8158's just have the logo molded into the plastic.
Both are good cases, just don't let them bait & switch on you.

Sweetwater has one for $130. With the name in the fur.
Be sure to add a note saying that you want this for a '72 Legend or do an online chat with them, that way if it don't fit you can return it.
They have a good return policy. So you can return it for an 8158 which actually states it will fit a Deep Bowl. The 9158 just states Mid-Depth bowl.

But if you really want the Brown, don't let me influence you.
Now... When buying a brown case, you will be getting a Used case.
Plus, not ALL Brown cases fit a Deep Bowl. Some are made for Artist Bowls which is kinda mid-depth before they called them Mid-Depth.
So make sure that you ask, and make sure the seller knows the difference.
Confused yet

Wow! Thank you so much for the information. Although it would be cool to have a vintage brown case, I'm probably never going to be taking the guitar out of my home. It seems a new case is the way to go for storage and protection from the grandkids, pets etc. I had been using a wall hanger but was advised to keep it in the case due to humidity changes.

Anyway thanks again for the information, I'll contact Sweetwater.

I'm not sure if I need permission to post elsewhere, but would appreciate it, if needed.
