Does anyone know what causes this? Edited by Peanut Butter 2015-10-20 8:38 AM (1778LXneckdots.jpg) Attachments ---------------- ![]()

Thanks for asking Dan (I consider you a resident genuis). First of all they are very small; that's close-up picture. Secondly, the extend from roughly the 5th fret to the 9th (on the back of the neck).
To answer your question, I'm not sure. as I said they are fairly small and my fingers sort of feel something, but then again, its pretty smooth.
Given the location on the back of the neck, I'm thinking some sort of reaction to the neck rest in the case. The guitar looks like it sat in the case (yes humidified, thank G-D) for 10 years. Edited by Peanut Butter 2015-10-20 9:01 AM

It happens during the clearcoating process when some contaminat like moist dust gets trapped - it doesn't appear right away. Mine is under the clearcoat and does not present as any sort of bump to the touch. I will try to get a pic tonight for comparison.

Not sure if it is the same as yours. At least its on the back! no one sees it when you are playing !! Unless you are turning dramaticly to the drummer I guess...

It happens when the mixture in the spray gun isn't thoroughly stirred and a thicker batch of clear momentarily comes out of the gun. you can sand them out if they bother you with 1000 grit sand paper or #0000 steel wool. Go easy.

That's a nice feeling (looks at hands to see if they're covered in snot).

The first thing I'd do is try some solvents, working from the most gentle: Soap and water Alcohol (isopropyl or denatured alcohol Naptha (lighter fluid) If these don't get rid of the spots, I'd take some polishing compound, like Turtle Wax or Maquire's #9 and polish some to see if they can be polished out. If not, then the only thing left is to wet sand with fine-grade sandpaper, like the 1000-grit Dave recommends. Wet sanding is better than dry sanding. (less mess and shallower scratching) After wet sanding, you'll need to use polishing compound to polish the surface back to the high-sheen, or if you like the satin neck, just leave it.

I think that's the advice I'll take. E-mail sent to John B.
