I have come across one of those USA Ovations with a FRS. It apears its a cosmetic blemish as the guitar seems to have no structural issues, and from what I have read here it seems the Mothership didn't release guitars that had not met its standards. Any insight to how much this devalues the guitar? Like does a $500 guitar become a $400? Generally do they maintain resale value or are they frowned apon?

FRG meant that it didn't pass inspection for some reason, so it was sent back to fix the problem. This is not to be confused with all of those "USED" guitars on eBay. Those failed inspection, but were sold as-is by the container-load. Also... Many Ovations were labeled FRG with No Defects to be sold at a lower price. As to the Lifetime Warranty... Technically that doesn't cover normal wear, you breaking the guitar, or electronics. So if the guitar is in good shape when you buy it a warranty is pretty meaningless. Also that Lifetime Warranty only applies to the original owner. I don't know if Ovation Repair is doing freebie warranty repair nowadays anyway. And if you return a Asian Ovation under their 5-year warranty, I think that they just give you another guitar. ![]() ![]()

So really like almost all US ovations the market value is dictated by the average price people buy these guitars for these days. The "used" or defective guitars were always stamped on the back of the headstock - I am correct that was that the only indicator?

This does not necessarily indicate a serious problem but could also reflect a visual blemish, or be simple "overstock" where they had move things out of the warehouse. MIRC inspects these guitars and does repairs and setup, and from what I have read on the interweb these can be great quality bargains, though I think warranty would be one year max or none. As they are sold significantly cheaper already at the dealer level, the resale value of used "used" guitars would drop accordingly. http://www.mircweb.com/

I bought it at the factory in 2000 after it came back from Japan (Nakau) for a supposed defect in the top. We never did find a defect anywhere on the guitar. It was given a once-over, the FRG label was applied inside the bowl near the neck joint and they let me buy it for $800 only because I was a long time subcontractor who knew the right people. Even still, when I was play testing the guitar somewhere deep within the bowels of the old factory, one of the new principals came along demanding to know who I was and why was I being allowed to buy a guitar at the factory. My Dad's old friend Everett, who was releasing the guitar to me, told this guy to 'Get the f&*$ out of here' The guy left. Don't mess with Everett.
