Randy, good to see you posting and to learn about your BSN...congrats! Violetta got hers in 2013 and is currently working on her FNP...due to graduate in Dec. '16...if you find out you're going to be on the East Coast, let me know...all the best!

hi mike!
great to hear from you. i still have the Ovation banner and think of you each time i see it. congrats to violetta!
she is very astute in going after the FNP. she will entirely benefit pursuing that route with the changing tide in american-style healthcare. that option is on my plate as well, however it is quite costly. i know of a few FNPs and APRNs who have accumulated nearly 100K in debt for three years of schooling. nuts!! luckily, i made it through the BSN on grants and scholarships. my daughter, katy. who is now a nurse in asheville, is giving birth in august. i will most likely be there for a week or two. perhaps we can connect then?

And don't forget this one! You know, at the gathering here a few years ago I was demonstrating the "dango" that my friend Vince built and this is the song I played. Before I even said anything some of the members recognized it and said, "Hey, isn't that Lanaki's song?"

Love your ki ho'alu playing, Randy! I only hope I can learn to play like that one day! (I'm still working my way slowly through Ozzie Kotani's book).

thank you. check out any instructional videos you can find by keola beamer. his style will help you feel the "heart" of what ki ho'alu is all about.

this link will get you started on the first of the series that is posted on youtube

Thanks for the tip. I've got Keola Beamer and Mark Nelson's book, Learn to play Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar, as well as Mark Nelson's Old Time Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar on top of the Ozzie Kotani book.

I've also got Ozzie's two instructional DVDs and Ledward Kaapana's DVD, as well as a bunch of CDs worth of ki ho'alu music.

I'll have to pick up the Keola Beamer video some time though.

Randy, welcome back! And big congrats!!!

Shall I pick one of my Ukes and sing a song on you? Well, I think, yes. Alway played "Gonna get along without you now", but since you're back...
I am playing loud, maybe you'd hear it.

Best regards,
Kurt

"taropatch" which is an open G.

detune your 6th (low E) a couple notes to D, detune your 5th (A) a couple notes to G, leave 4th, 3rd, and 2nd strings in standard tuning, detune 1st (high E) a couple notes to D. (D-G-D-G-B-D).

You should check out some of the other ki ho'alu stuff on Youtube, Nancy. It's wonderfully relaxing stuff.

Ovation guitars are pretty popular in Hawaii too, so it's also fun to play spot the O when you watching
