Location: Newbury Park Ca | Hello, I am hoping that some knowledgeable member can help me with this question. I just picked up a 1973 Ovation Classical Acoustic Electric Guitar from a Pawn Shop here in Denver, it has a metal oval label with a handwritten model number 1623-4. Not sure it this is a mistake and should be 1624-4 or if it was custom made?
I can post photos if you need me too but any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Location: Jet City | It almost sounds like it was a Classic Artist instead of a Country Artist.
Only thing is, I never heard of a Classic Artist. Mighta been a custom order. I also thought the model was stamped on the foil labels |

Location: Newbury Park Ca | Thank you for the reply. I have only seen stamped model numbers on the metal label but this one is clearly written with a pen but they pushed hard and indented the metal. I am thinking it is a special order too. There used to be a "crack the code" on the Ovation website but it has been removed. Just curious what the numbers in the model number stand for? |

Location: Jet City | it depends on the timeframe, but in those days the 6 woulda meant a/e, the 2 woulda meant artist bowl, and the 3 woulda meant classical (verses 4 for the County)
the -4 is for the natural finish |

Location: Newbury Park Ca | Thank you so much for the information, that is very interesting. Based on the serial number and the information on the Ovation website, the guitar is from early 1973. I cant believe the condition of the guitar, it is excellent. Because of the dry weather here almost every Ovation I come across has cracks in the top but not this one. Thank you again for the info! |

Location: Phoenix AZ | I do remember looking into this many moons ago. Now I think about it maybe it was something like the Artist Classic is the non-cutaway one, and the Country Classic is the cutaway. Otherwise identical. I dunno ... the numbering and naming was not always in synch. And what actually got on the label could be a function of the time of day. Who knows. Or maybe better off not knowing. |
