Location: Yokohama, Japan | I came across this video of Larry Coryell in a 1987 interview at his alma mater, University of Washington. Lot's of interesting conversation and guitar licks. His Adamas is incredible. Can you tell what it is? It looks like a 1581. At 18:24 Larry makes a quick comment saying, "I wish Wes could have played a guitar like this." referring to Wes Montgomery. The interviewer asks Larry what kind of guitar he's playing, but his answer gets edited out, and Ovation is never mentioned! I have no problems watching this video over here in Japan, I hope you all can see it in the States. Great stuff...

Location: Chicago | Yeah, Kaki King was on the local NPR station (WBEZ) before a show and was asked about her instrument. The interviewer didn't even seem sure it was a guitar! Kaki had to do a lot of explaining. Oy. |

Location: Yokohama, Japan | 1688? hmmm...it looks like the guitar has two knobs where the 1688 pre-amp would normally be? Am I being Mr. Ignoramous? I wonder if this is some kind of custom 1688? In either case, it has a beautiful resonant voice.

I think that all of the earlier Adamas I models had the two-knob preamps.
Later Adamii started getting OP-24, then Optima, then OP-series drop-in preamps.
Then some of the Re-Issues went back to two-knobs
But I could be wrong.

Thanks OMA. Adamii history is deep and fascinating. Still the cut-away is a bit of a mystery. The Ovation Tribute site lists the Adamas 1688 and 1685 as deep bowl 12-strings, but no cut-away. The 1581 and 1587 are listed as deep bowl cut-away but no 12-string models...must be some kind of custom model.

This thread is quite lively with some interesting blows going this way and that...but, the seller Pauly13 was directly in touch with Larry who was at Orlando airport on his way to Spain. They were trying to sell if for 4 or 5 grand. Then the thread veers off into left field, and...Pauly13 I guess went elsewhere to sell this thing??? The website that was set-up to sell Larry's guitars is still viewable. Interesting! Anyway, this Adamas is apparently a custom 1588-2! Gotta love all the history behind these great guitars! |

Location: NJ | Back during th'Ovation 40thAnniversary Party at NAMM, Beal walked-up to me with this guy(that I SOMEwhat recognized, but couldn't quite "place" ).
". . Cliff! . . meet "Larry"!! . . " and walked-off to greet yet another Well-Wisher in th'Ballroom.
"Larry" and I stood at th'Bar drinking(I was drinking, He wasn't), telling off-colour Jokes to each other, laughing, and having a REALLY Good Time.
He asked me what had brought me there, and I explained that I owned/played Ovations for YEARS, had become friend w/Bill, trips to th'Factory, etc.
When I posed th'Question to Him, he likewise said he was an Ovation fan for a LongTime, knew Bill, and (as he nodded towards th'Stage that was awaiting th'Night's Entertainment) he said "and, . . I just HAD to come Tonight to see "MyBoy" there" . . . .
th'Night's Performer was Al DiMeola.
I looked at him and said "Are you "Larry" CORYELL?? . . ."
He laughed and said, "Yeah well, I USED t'Be!! . . ."
We had a GREAT Time! . . . VERY NiceGuy!!

Location: Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire | after watching the YouTube video of Larry from the Univ of Wash, a bunch of other video's popped up with his name. The one on Jimi Hendrix is pretty good as well. Seems they have some history hanging out together! He's a Jazz guy for sure but certainly keeps good company around the industry. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | I never got into the fusion stuff much, except for an album by McLaughlin and Santana that a college roommate had and I was a Santana fan. I knew McLaughlin was an Ovation player. Coryell was in the famous trio while I was in my 30 year guitar hiatus. There were a lot of great Ovation players during that time. This was a great site for learning about all those great musicians. |
