Location: Phoenix, AZ | I have a BCS-2007 bought from Guitar Center in Phoenix. Op pro preamp is dead. VIP-5 preamp has new battery, but batt light stays on - so not sure I can trust it. XLR out is not working at all. Is there a good Ovation electrical person anyone knows of in Phoenix. This is a great sounding/playing guitar that is impossible to gig with. I need correction desperately. Can the guitar cause the premps to sort out? |

Location: Sydney, Australia | The XLR out will only work (under normal circumstances) with a special XLR cable (1-pin grounded from memory) or if something is plugged into the 1/4" plug at the same time. The light staying on indicates a dying battery (I think).
The usual cause of a dead battery (apart from normal use) is leaving a cord plugged into the 1/4 " plug. If you haven't made either of those two (common) mistakes, someone who knows more about this will be along shortly.
Oh, and welcome to the madhouse. |

Location: Honey brook, PA 19344 USA | Just a thought. Try putting a new duracell in it just because a lot of the sale batts are low on charge and I ran into a problem a long time ago because I tried using rechargeables and they don't actually charge to the full voltage so the guitar never worked right because it was like putting a new fully recharged battery but was not good enough to break the threshold voltage for some of the resistors on the board. If that doesn't help give me the exact year make model and I will try to look up a wiring diagram and walk you thru it. Be happy to help if you want. I have some experience repairing computer boards in guitars. Fixed a casio 380 synth guitar that didn't work and will be doing more. Let me know if I can help. |

Location: Phoenix, AZ | BCS-2007 electronic issues were solved. Kaman sent me a spare Op Pro Studio for - I think it was $250 - been a while now. Also I got a "dummy plug", to put into 1/4" plug when I use XLR output. All works great now. Guitar Center had a spare VIP-5 - Now I have the Op Pro Studio and the VIP-5, both work and sound GREAT. This guitar sound, big, deep, stringy and brilliant in any decent PA. My drummer, who is never impressed with much of anything, was really pleasantly surprised - so was I. I'm very sorry Ovation stopped production. Maybe in the future they'll start up again. We can only hope. - RP |
