My worship leader at my church dropped his guitar and broke the top. Does anyone know where to get replacement parts for the guitar. Looks like I will have to make a new top and bracing, but am wondering what kind of glue to use in joining the wood to the plastic.

Thanks for any help

If in doubt, take it to a luthier. If you just want to screw around, just go to HOme Depot and ask for the strongest glue for plastic to wood. Don't expect anything pretty though.

You might want to get a book on guitar repair like Guitar Repair by Dan Erlwine.

Depends on the guitar. I am assuming it is an Ovation because you said "wood to plastic" If it's an inexpensive/easy to find one, it might be easier/cheaper to replace it with another. If it's a more expensive one or has sentimental value, and you really want it done to perfection, send it back to the factory.

If it were me I would send it back to the Mother Ship, aka the factory.

Technically, the preferred adhesive is the 5-minute, 2-part epoxy. I don't work anywhere that fast, so I use the 90-minute type.
If you're contemplating a top replacement, it better be worth the time & effort. I would agree with the observations of my learned colleagues; if it's a USA "O", send it to The Wizards @ The MotherShip. If not, do it locally.

Wow you guys are brutal. There is some good advice in there. The guitar is a model 1612 made in Conn. The 5 min epoxy I think I will try. I am glueing up the top tonight and will try to fit it this weekend. Does any one have experience sending guitars to the factory. What would it cost to have them put a new top on? Either way I will make a post when I get the guitar back together

Plenty of experience sending them back. The factory sometimes does a better job fixing them than they do building them in the first place. You will need to contact John Budny or Kim Keller to get a return auth. number, then ship it to them and they will give you a written estimate before repair. I don't know how they feel about posting their email addresses so I will pm you the address.

I'm assuming your 1612 is relatively old, at least 20 years. I've heard great things about sending them to Ovation for repair, but, the caveat is a new top may change the tone. Your top has "opened up" over 20 years, and probably sounds kind of mellow. Something to think about.

Ok thanks. I have my new top in the glue now and hope to have a good feel if I can make it work in a couple of days. I have lots of woodworking experence and have some interest in making guitars for myself. I am just playing around with this one. If all else fails I will send to back the factory.

I hope you'll consider posting some before and after pics for the rest of us to admire. Many of us have little skill in this area and even less patience to try it, so we appreciate the work of those who can and do. You sound like you have some experience in this area.

Typically, The MotherShip likes to replace the top & bowl, as a unit. About $500.00, ballpark-estimate.
We are always looking for more BFLG personnel, though. You appear to have the requisite prowess & fortitude!
