Was that an official Ovation specifications chart or one that someone had made from research? The reason I ask is concerning the Vipers. When it says that particular pickups were used on specific Viper models, it shows 3 different Viper model numbers ... 1271, 1273, and 1275. I know the Viper was 1271 and the Viper III was the 1273. If the Viper 12-String was model 1275, I don't ever remember seeing a model number for it before. Any additional info?

So a few guesses on Viper model numbers without looking at the FAQ... There were a couple of Prototype Viper 12's... who knows if the list was made with the "intention" of making a 12 or what. Also the Viper 3 had essentially 3 different pickups on it. The middle pickup has few winds and of course the magnets and spacing were different on the other two. Not sure any of this is relevant... just putting it out there.

The model numbers started out in a logical fashion, but then as new models were added, it didn't work too well. When they started with a 4 digit model number, each digit having a special meaning, I bet nobody thought about having more than 9999 models. I bet there are a lot of manufacturers of various products that don't have good records of the models produced 40 or 50 years ago.

But, I really never had any confusion over the model numbering system for the early 1970's to early 1980's solid body electrics. 1250's were for the Breadwinner/Deacon, 1260's for the Magnum basses, 1270's for the Vipers, 1280's for the Preachers, and 1290's for the UKIIs. That being said, don't ask me why the models in a series went 1, 2, 3.. but the Viper was 1271 and the Viper III was 1273, without any mention of a 1272. Now THAT one has always puzzled me (overlooking the obvious 1273 for 3 pickups). I LOVE a mystery!!!

I wonder if there was any chance the Bluebirds got an actual model number? Although they were a Urelite body... they were shaped like a Viper, not a UKII so there was a mold and everything. Maybe it was "supposed" to be a production model that never happened, but got a model number assigned somewhere in the process... All speculation... lots of possibilities.

Mr. O, I didn't see a picture of the Viper Bass on your website. Was I looking in the wrong place? Could have sworn you had a picture posted at one time. Didn't it have a large Magnum pickup and the Magnum tailpiece?

Didn't it have a large Magnum pickup and the Magnum tailpiece? Yep it's out there somewhere, I'll have to find it. Also there were actually more Viper 12's than I thought about as there were Bluebird 12's and likely a few extra of those made not in blue. Those would be hard to spot unless someone knew what they had. I had a Viper made of Urelite that other than the weight, (lite as a feather) you'd have to disassemble to know it wasn't wood.

I'm interested in doing something similar with a viper. Any info on the build would be very cool. That chart was plucked from the OvationTribute site of Jerome's. The Neck pocket will need to be shaved a little larger but the rest is pretty straight forward. I used a sharp chisel. You can route or sand if you want. The hard part is obtaining a 12 string neck and bridge.
