In a pawnshop in a small town up the west coast, I found a pristine '91C (25 Year Anniv.), # 403.
Strings are off, fretboard cleaned/oiled.
Is there anything I can do to brighten the silver inlays in the finger board?
They look like plated silver, so I would not want to harm them with anything abrasive.
Also, if you happen to know the bracing pattern.....?

Boating has it's rewards.

Not sure about those inlays. Haven't had a '91C model.

I wonder if they're silver-plated or maybe solid nickel??

Anyway FWIW, I've cleaned up a few old coins just using a bit of toothpaste. Yup, toothpaste. It's a very mild abrasive, non-toxic and left the coins smelling minty fresh.

Test it out on an old tarnished penny and see for yourself. Oh yeah, use an old toothbrush.     blech

Might even help increase the sustain too... the label says prevents decay.   bah-dump-dump-tish

Don't know which bracing it has, but a bracing pattern historian ought to be by shortly.

And congrats on your newly acquired O!

Good point. Should not harm the wood. I'll give it a try second thing in the morning (after I brush my tooth).
All 3 shims were in place, now lowered for sweet action, and it has a full, rich tone typical of deep bowls.
#10 for me. Addictive...

"after I brush my tooth"

Are you sure you aren't from East Texas?

They are addictive, indeed! Great find. About the bracing...if you have a small digital camera, you can stick it in the sound hole (when the strings are removed) and click away. I don't get many, but every "O" I get, I stick my digital camera in the sound hole and get a pretty good shot of the bracing pattern. Of course, one of the super knowledgeable OFC guys will be around shortly to advise accordingly.

Enjoy!

You guys make me smile, teeth and all....
A small mirror reveals it is X-bracing (not modified X which maybe came later).
I ended up using a silver polish. Silver is soft, so not too abrasive. Cloth turned black, and it shined up nicely. especially the "1991" inlay.
And I still have toothpaste.

very good! ...ah, but will the silver polish "prevent decay"

X bracing... interesting, I noticed today, an old OFC thread that mentioned the '91C was A braced.

http://ovationfanclub.com/megabbs/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=1577&mid=18583

For a long time I just assumed (shame on me) that my 1617-4 Legend was A braced, until recently while changing the strings and battery, I actually felt around inside and discovered it has VT-11 bracing. Not that I have any problem with that, it still sounds great. Just never knew what it had.

Schroeder chimes in on that old thread with, "and Brad never met a meat and potatoes that he didn't like." Classic poke. I bet even Slipkid thought that was funny. I miss that guy.

Do you think silver polish will work on the abalone inlays of a custom legend,i have one where some of the inlays look discolored not sure if its ageing or tarnish.isn't the 91C the 25th anniversary balladeer?might explain the x-bracing question.

Never tried it, but I wouldn't use it on m.o.p. or abalone.

From what I've read, mild soap and water ought to do the job, unless as you say it's been discolored.
