The first was a Matrix with the infamous cast aluminum fretboard. Though not worth very much, it is the easiest-playing, most fun to play git I own. Git was free; case cost me $100. Not bad. A friend just gave me a Korean-made Applause Summit Series model AE-28 he never played. Not a git that I would have bought, but hey, the price was right (free), and it plays well. It has what I would describe as a very shallow bowl -- much more so that the Matrix or my Balladeer 12 string. Am about to pull the trigger on a super-shallow case (model 8117), but wanted to post here first. There is conflicting information in this listing of Ovations, which shows the AE-28 as being a deep bowl model: http://www.ovationfanclub.com/megabbs/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=32... Is anyone familiar with this model? Would you describe it as shallow or super shallow? Finally, is there a big difference between the 8117 case and the heavier-duty 9117? Worth the extra $? Any help would be appreciated!

But the old listings that I've found say Super-Shallow Bowl. And stray internet photos look like an SSB Cutaway. As to the difference between 8117 and 9117... 9117's have "Ovation" printed in fur on the lid and a metal "Ovation" label on the outside. The 8117 has "Ovation" molded into the case, nothing in the fur. Side Note... I don't know where you are getting you case from, but I have been getting mine from Sam Ash Go HERE to get a 15% off code.

I had planned on paying Amazon $99 and getting it in two days via my Prime membership, but the deal you pointed me to was too good to pass up! Case arrived yesterday, and the latch closest to the headstock broke off on first use. It's on its way back now for replacement. As a followup, are the only differences between the 8117 and 9117 cosmetic ones? If so, not worth an extra $20 to me. If, however, the plastic is thicker or the handle more comfy, then I'd consider. Anyone know? As an aside, I have two other cases, about ten years apart in age (oldest is about 20 years). The older one is constructed of MUCH heavier plastic, and has better hardware. Wondering if this might be the case with the 8117 and the 9117? Thanks in advance. Mike

It even has a locking mechanism and comes with one key (never used it). I've actually got two of those cases, a knock-off brand (can't recall it, but it fits a SSB just as well as the factory case) and I've got a couple of the brown vintage cases for my vintage deep bowls. I've not had any of the deluxe, but knowing how nice the regular cases have been I don't see any valid reason to go with a deluxe case since they don't protect the guitar any better nor does it fit any better and they just have some fancy looking signage or whatever you call it on the outside.

Don't know if there are any other differences (besides the "fuzzies" on the inside), but for 20 bucks extra just the handle is worth it if you have to carry the guitar for more than a block or two. So, before you pay an extra $20 for a padded handle, make sure it has one. For an Applause, I'd just get the cheapest case that fits. My Matrix still resides in the original chipboard case I got in 1977. The case is falling apart, but the guitar is fine.
