| I assumed that my recent acquisition of a 1971 Ovation Country Artist with VT-8 bracing would have had a bridge plate of sorts. I could not feel one and I cannot locate an actual picture of the VT-8 soundboard with bracing (anyone have a pic they can share?)
I want to install a good transducer type pickup like the K&K Pure Classic but how does one go about that task when there is no bridge plate? Am I left with an under saddle transducer as an only option (like the Baggs Element)?
Please chime in with some words of wisdom.

Location: Texas | As far as aftermarket pickups go, you have quite a few decent choices, but for about a year or so, I have heard tremendous things about the Barbera pickup. Here is a picture of your VT8

Thanks for the tip on Barbera. I suppose I should be concentrating on internal sound board transducers rather than bridge plate transducers. Any suggestions; don't know if K&K would work without a plate?

Location: Denmark | No personal experience with K&K On their website At http://kksound.com/contact.php they inform the technical support e-mail address techsupport at kksound.com. If I were in your shoes I would ask them. I don't think it is that common with inside bridge plates on classical guitars so I guess they have an answer ready. |

Location: Pueblo West, CO | Here's a pic of the K&K Pure Classic pup installed. According to their web site, the pup is installed onto the underside of the bridge plate using either CA or double-sided tape. I don't think this type of pup would require an actual bridge plate. I think they're just using that term as a point of reference. If you notice in the pic below, there's no bridge plate installed on this guitar, either. It looks to me like the elements just need to be evenly spaced across the area where the bridge is located.  |

I received this email from K&K and they confirmed that there is no need for a bridge plate, you are both correct:
Ron,
Most classical guitars do not have a bridgeplate so this is not a serious issue. The pickup is mounted directly under the line of the saddle with the transducers spaced according to the installation instructions. If one of the braces interferes with the placement then the transducers can be adjusted (while staying inline under the saddle) to accommodate.
Check the installation instructions: http://kksound.com/pdf/pureclassic.pdf for recommend locations.
If you can indicate on the bracing diagram the location of the saddle it will help locater the pickups.

Location: Texas | I put one of those in a beater shiny that I have. It is a little tricky sticking your hand in the hole, using a mirror and being able to press each pickup in the right place. Without a plate, I would think that you would have to pre-mark a reference point. The end result sounds just fine. I have always wondered how well they reproduce the nylons...let us know! |
