| Hi there! A little over a year ago I happened to inherit a late '70s Breadwinner. Since figuring out I needed to replace the 30-year old batteries to get some sound out of it, it has been my go-to guitar, sounds amazing, and is an absolute joy to play. I've noticed however that I now have a problem with my wound strings breaking at the point where they rest on the (plastic) saddles. The issue seems to be worst on the fifth string, but has occurred on all three multiple times. Since this has never been an issue on any of my other guitars, it seems to be clear that this is an issue with the Breadwinner, and not my manner of playing.
I don't mind replacing the strings often, but having strings break during a performance has been a bit of a hassle, and I've been bringing a second guitar as backup for this reason. I brought it up with my neighborhood guitar shop, and they stated that they hadn't worked with plastic saddles before, so weren't sure if just filing them would be the best approach to take.
Doing some quick searches of the forums didn't result in anything either, so I guess my question is, has anybody noticed this issue before with the electrics sporting the plastic saddles? If so, is there a fix that anyone has found? I swear I remember reading somewhere online about someone replacing their bridge with a different bridge entirely, which I would really prefer not to do if possible. Also, I'm not too terribly handy, so apologies if this is a dumb question.
Thanks in advance! |

The only thing I can think of is that you somehow managed to get too much angle on the strings, or maybe it's the strings? Those are nylon saddles and as such are pretty kind to strings. Next time you change strings I would also look at anything that might be stressing the strings at that point. It's just a very odd place to break consistently without some other factor.

Welcome Chris!
Send me your BW and I'll take a look at it. It may take me a couple of years but I'll figure it out.
Post some pictures of the guitar, we like that! |
