Location: Muenster/Germany | When I was ...younger...all the stars played OVATIONS.I was not a star, so I bought a cheap Applause at that time and was quite dissappointed. Played all kinds of other guitars then.
Many years later I stumbled on a battered custom legend 1619 with lots of finish cracks and even a rusty trussrod, but WHAT A SOUND it had and a very low action, straight neck and was ridiculously easy to play...and from that day on I began to read and learn more about Ovation construction, different bracings, and soon found an old Pacemaker and an Artist, both in very poor shape but great sounding and as easy playable. I sold them and found a Custom Legend deep bowl cutaway, even better than my old one. And a 1613 Classic, which I exchanged for a 1624 country artist. And a Glen Campbell 12string.And an Anniversary....Then I found my first ADAMAS, a 1688 12string, which would outplay ERVERY other guitar.Why not try an ADAMAS 6string? So did I and soon had a 1687 and a 2087, (which sounds much better with additional soundholes in the cutaway side). Then I heard that ELITES should sound little smoother, sold my 1687 and found a sunburst ELITE 1718, which I think is one of the best Ovations ever. And just lately I sold my wonderful 1719-30 just to buy a 1759 custom legend 12string without a scratch on it. Anywhere an old Elite sunburst 12string for sale? And maybe I´ll find a 1987 collector´s...*sigh*

Location: Muenster/Germany | Thanks to all the friendly replies. Unaccustomed as I am to english writing I beg you to overlook minor or major linguistic mistakes that might occur in the future...
Oh yes, I know what GAS is, but with the years I came to the realization that I will not be able to resist all the wonderful guitars...the only thing I do is to keep a stock of ca. 10 to 13 guitars and always give one away if a new one shows up. If I don´t find a place for another guitar stand or wall hanger....
I love Ovations, but would you give away a Martin D45, or a lovely Gibson MK 72 with such an incomparable bluesy sound? But I´ll stick by my Ovations!
I told you about my fancy 1990 Custom Legend 12string. When I got it, it looked as new, but there were some smaller problems: some "specialist" had tried to set up the string action with the truss-rod screw and the neck had quite a "hump". The neck itself had a bending at the 14th fret because of a slightly bad angle, thus was unplayable. I had to remove the neck for a re-set, straighten the free part of the fretboard, and finally exchange one of the shims under the pickup (for 0.2mm higher action), finally doing little fret-polish here and there...file the saddle to exact shape (most guitar saddles are very badly made) and now the instrument plays like it was supposed to.
You see, I love my guitars and sometimes I spent 2 hours of work for a 1/10mm improvement...but I have absolutely no idea of electronics. And I have a question: Is it possible to exchange the OP24 Preamp with a new OP-Pro with using the old connection cables/jacks from the undersaddle pu and the plug socket? |
