Location: Northern Minnesota | I have a 1981 Ovation Custom Legend 1658 12-string that is in good condition. I use it every day to practice for two church Masses every month. However, the top has many surface (laquer) cracks running mostly from the bridge to the bottom. You really don't see them, except in the right light. Has anyone had their guitar retopped at the factory, and if so, are there 'stages' of repair? IE, first stage is retopping, second stage is fret board repair/replacement, etc. A factory rep told me that retopping is $700, and to switch to the newer electronics is about $250 more. Should a person retop it, or just keep playing? |

They would basically attach your old neck to a new guitar.
The other option would be to sand the finish off of the top...
That would probably cost more and take longer, and if it isn't a historically important guitar that would probably be cost-prohibitive.
If your guitar still plays fine, I would just keep playing it.
Before you start spending a lot of money over cosmetic issues.
If your neck is good, for a thousand bucks they will put a new body on it with new electronics and redress the frets and all of that.
It would be cheaper than buying a new guitar, and it would be a custom job.
Also... If you were to send your guitar to the Factory they would fix it up nicely.

That is certainly an option and depending on several factors nearly undetectable when they are finished. |

Location: Northern Minnesota | Thank you for your thoughts everyone.. I'm in a quagmire as what to do. The guitar has wonderful tone and sustain and I would hate to have the neck just put on another body when this one has 33 year old wood that has mellowed with age... and, when you have a guitar that you've had that long since it was new, it is tough to think of 'that sound' to be different.. I put a new set of strings on every month, and WOW.. each time I think I have a new guitar!
Refinishing sounds better to me now |
