Location: Northern Minnesota | Well, I thought I'd try it.. uff da. Anyone using the "Double Nashville" string set-up? From what I understand, you re-string your 12 string with only the high octive strings and the lowest is the octive high for the low-E string. I had to try it.. but now, I'm not quite a fan..
I have it on my older 12 string, and it sounds tinny.. really tinny. Darn near Dobro'ish.
It must be used in a group where they want a certain harmony/descant musicians part.
I cannot think of a time I'd use it.
Anyone using it? And, why? |

Location: Tennessee | I did to my 12 some years back, although I made up my own method since I didn't know there was any such thing as double Nashville. Here's how I did it:
All of the High E, B and G strings were used from a regular set of 12 strings. Then I set up the D, A, and Low E strings as pairs using the Octave strings and the appropriate stings from a set of D'Addario Nashville strings.
Why? Because it was there and I could get a different sound. I'd never heard of a 12 being strung Nashville so I tried it. I recorded one of my songs with it for some reason or other. You can hear it here I think: http://myspace.com/stonebobborocks/music/song/very-well-19289831-19... It's a terrible recording so you probably need to put headphones on or have some good full range speakers hooked up. (Had to go find the song ... MySpace? There's one for the ages. Ha.) The CL 12 is there, plus a Deacon 12 and a bass. The song was "droney" to start with and so I went for accentuating it with the modified Nashville stringing.
Rule #1 in music: break the rules.
Have fun with it. |
