I was working on listing some old sheet music on eBay and found several pieces written for the Ukulele and Banjolele???? I just sat there staring at the pages.

Well after a quick search on google, I found some info on them. Basically just what the name infers. A Ukulele with a Banjo body.

Whodathunkit....

They were developed by the CIA for "interrogation" purposes.

During the "banjo boom" of the 1920's there were banjo versions of just about everything with strings. Mandolin-banjos are common in antique shops over here, and the banjolele was huge for a while because of George Formby. Horrible, horrible instruments. The work of Satan.

First time I heard of one was on Queen's Sheer Heart Attack album. Brian May played about 3 seconds of Bring Back Leroy Brown on one.

I no longer have it, but at one point I did in fact have a banjolele. Banjo meets ukulele - the worst of both worlds.

Ok... well it seems like it's almost one of those "gotta have it" instruments. Ya-know... so ugly it's cute. Well maybe not :(

Well I had never heard of it before.. but apparently it was popular enough in the 1920's to have lots of sheet music written for it.

Ain't that just sumpt'n..

If you wanna' hear one, listen to Harrison's last album "Brainwashed".
The first track "Any Road" features a banjolele.
It may appear on one other track as well, but on that one it's most prevalent . . .

There a George Fromby society and they have a website. I think Godtone makes them currently. Ludwig and Slingerland made them in the 1920s. Theyre fun, but Ilike Ukuleles much better. Just hearing a ukulele reminds me of when I visited Hawaii. The musak inthe elevators and grocery stores in honlul is full of ukelele tunes.
