Okay folks,

I've only been an Ovation guy for almost 30 years and obviously have a range there, but I think it's time for me to move into the other part of the family too.

What do you think is the best "value" in the Adamas line??? (No....I can't afford an original slothead)

I see many W597s for sale on craigslist, the 'bay, etc., but the ranges on asking price are ridiculous. How some can get $700 and others $2000 just seems nuts.

Any thoughts??? Thanks...

get a woven/textured top (1581, 1587 etc.) if you will play mostly acoustic. the smooth tops like the W597 are best plugged in, in my opinion.

Value is only determined by what your standards of acoustic sound production are. Really... as far as I am concerned the Adamas 1's & 2's are the best for sound, I have decided to not accept anything less no matter the price. They range in a price from (on average) $2200 and $1200. The Admas 2's are most likly the best value as they don't sport the carvings but they do have the rest of the great features that make these guitars sound so beautiful. The newer Adamas,s are not nearly in this acoustic sound category. Right now the market is nutty, I have an Adamas 1 running on ebay now and in the past this would not have stayed on there for a few hours with the BIN price I have. Today's market?? it changes daily. next week it will sell, this week it won't? or vica versa go figure.

Al Pep has a bunch of great sounding Adamas's he even has some that had factory blemishes that were really not bad at all, and the prices are right.

STOP THE PRESS: The best value in my opinion are those Textured Top Adamas Export models that Al had. I think he still has some. They are WAY under valued and under appreciated. Plus they are rare as hell. I've got one in -8 blue and it sounds amazing. I would STRONGLY suggest you contact Al and check into these. My recollection is that the price will shock you (in a good way). There's photos of mine on my website.

Anything Adamas made with a textured top should make you very happy. The next argumentive question is which bowl depth you should get. I like deep, but some like shallow, and the shallow bowls tend to go cheaper. The thing is, if you are ready to upgrade to Adamas, you should just save up and get exactly what you want. (while there are still lots of good deals on them)

There was a UTE (U-681-T) for sale here in the "for sale" section last week. Theyre kind of a rare bird and sound great unplugged.

I'd go with Bluesailor's Ute if you want a fingerstyle guitar and one of those exports if not. If I didn't have the OFC, I would have bought one of Al's export models. The opportunity to have one of 12 Slothead reissues owned only by a small group of Ovation wackos, however, could not be passed up.

I made the mistake of trying to talk my wife into going with me on a factory tour once. She saw the group photo and got scared, saying, "You're going alone on this one." It is a bunch of wackos.

The UTEs a 12 fretter, so don't get one if you need to play up the neck.

if you're going to go past the 12th fret, buy a strat or something.

Thanks to everybody for the comments. Mostly I'm hearing confirmations of my own opinions, but frankly that means a lot as to trusting a decision that I end up making. It's time to make up my mind and pursue one.

Also thanks, in general, to the forum and the founders. What a great community to be a part of.

Best Regards,
Steve McCoy

Unless you can find some local Adamas guitars to try out, you're pretty much at the mercy of this board for opinions. That worked fine for me. I don't think I had the opportunity to try an Adamas until the Ute arrived at my door. A couple of local guitar players who are much better than me have now tried it and are stunned. If you have a concensus here you are pretty safe.
