I just purchased a 1993 Collector's Edition guitar with a three band equalizer, no tuner, single volume control. I am really surprised at the level of background hiss I get out of the on board preamp. I was led to believe that the electronics would be extremely quiet. The level of hiss that I get would prevent me from recording with this guitar which is a big disappointment. I wonder if there might be something wrong with the preamp? I also get some strange mixing products on certain notes that produce some higher frequency buzzings.... hard to explain really, but doesn't sound right. I'm just playing clean through a known good amplifier.
Any tips would be appreciated.
The upside is that the guitar really sounds great unplugged !

Location: Capital District, NY, USA Minor Outlying Islands | Since you've eliminated the amp, it could be a piezo thing or the pre-amp. After checking for lose wires, I'd bring it to a professional. |

It should be quiet.
You may not want to use the pick up to record with.
A condenser mic is the way to go to record. |

Location: Eaton, Indiana | I have had several Ovations of that vintage and had very little noise with the preamps. You probably have an electronics problem. A trip back to the mother ship might be in order. I suppose you have checked the obvious...
Low battery voltage
bad cables
internal plug from the pickup to the preamp
mis-match of impedance to the recording board

Just because the light comes on when you press the battery check button doesn't mean the battery is good.
New battery and all is sweet. Just an amazing musical instrument.

Location: Florida Central Gulf Coast | A cold solder joint or a broken shield can cause some hiss.
Also, way back when, I use to have to invert my amp wall plug at times. Is that still an issue nowadays with the polarized jacks? :confused: |
